FRIDAY, MAY 21, 1948 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE FIFTEEN Marking Machine Boon to Teachers Edmonton -- (CP) -- Alberta's school 'teachers have been spared a large part of the annual chore of marking examination papers by use of a machine that automatically marks papers of a certain type. 'The machine has a maximum po- tential scoring rate of 120,000 ques- tions an hour, or 2,000 a minute. Some 50 per cent of all final ex- amination papers from the Univer- sity of Alberta's education faculty aire being machine-scored this year. is summer, six school examina- tions, four in Grade 9 and two in Grade 12, will be partially or wholly machine-scored. Since the machine came into use here it has been used to score many term papers as well as 10,000 spe- cial examinations for British Col- umbia's education department. The machine scores types of ex- aminations known! as "multiple choice" and "true and false." An- swers are recorded by heavy pencil marks on a special sheet or card. The sheet is fed into the machine and when the pencil marks are in the right place they complete elec- trical circuits thus operating the scoring system. Sheets with up to 300 questions can be processed by the machine. Atachments for the machine are available to increase the complex- ity of the marking that can be | done. The education department is going to rent an item counter which will give the percentage of students who correctly answered any given question, thus ascertaining the val- idity of exam questions. Officials of the education depart- ment say the machine is especially valuable ag a saver of fgme and effort in this period of high enrol- ment in universities and high schools. TREE HAS EVERYTHING Perhaps the world's most re- markable tree is the Morcihe Palm of Venezuela. Its fruit is edible, the juice is made into beer, the sap into wine and the pith into bread. It provides thatch for fish-lines, cordage and nets, The wood is good for building. L] - To Our Patrons: Coal will definitely be in short supply.
