Canadians far and wide can gain some insight into the career of the great bucolic poetess by dialing in to an hour-long pro- gram dedicated to her -on CBC's "Wednesday Night," May 26. It's true that the satire by Paul 'G. Hiebert, professor of chemistry &t 'the University of Manitoba, has spread her fame to an ever-in- creasing circle of admirers. Newspaper reviews, magazine articles and previous radio tributes have all but made her name a household by-word. But for the reader long on good intentions and short on performance -- for the harassed fellow who wages a los- ing battle to keep up with what was cwrent six months ago--the radio adaptation of Professor Hie- bert's book will be a boon indeed. Tommy Tweed, writer and actor Of Stage 48 fame, and a close friend of Hiebert, was the logical man to take on the difficult task of summarizing Sarah's career for radio listeners without sacrificing any of the pastoral quality of her life or the delicate lyricism of her verse. It takes a'deft hand, for instance, to treat of the woman who could wrife the poem to an- Ojibway maiden beginning: "Patrick O'Neil O'Connell Late of the Mounted Police And Moon-in-the-eyes Maconald Are blessed but not by the priest." To say nothing of the sorrowful fragment that goes: "With grief engraven on my soul, I cannot roll in glee, The robin's note is but a dirge, 'The biscuit-bird grits me." Critics and sundry kill-joys will always be around to tell us that Sarah and the other characters in the book--Rosalind Drool; Dr. Taj Mahal; Prof. Horace Marrowfat; Matilda Schwantzhacker, least cross-eyed of the 13 Schwantz- hacker sisters; William Greenglow, failed B.A.; and Sarah's grand- father, Old Sage, who was stuffed and mounted and presented to the HAloR-<are not real people after all.
