African Finds Picture Life Of Early Man Bloemfontein, South Africa -- (CP)--Major discoveries, counted among the most important in the world, have been made by Prof. C. van Riet Lowe, director of the Archaeololgical Survey of the Union of South Africa. On two farms in the southern Orange Free State and northern Cape, sites have been found of stone age factories where prehistoric man made his primitive tools. Nearby, more evidence has been found of different aspects of early man's life and for the first time a comprehen- sive picture of this life has been obtained. Prof, van Riet Lowe said the dis- coveries have indicated that the area southwest of Bloemfontein contains the most valuable collec- tion of stone age relics in exist ence, At "Rietvlei" farm near Steyns- burg, in the northern Cape, evi- dence was found which enabled the professor to work out a full picture of prehistoric civilization. The one factory site where men made their crude stone implements was located on a plateau near a mountain on this farm. Here they sat and fash- ioned the stones in the shade of a nearby rocky cliff. A few yards away, in the moun- tain itself definite traces were found of the mines from which they obtained the "raw" stones. To complete the picture, a number of rock shelters were also discovered of the type used by early man. "It is of paramount importance to study prehistoric man in his nat- ural environment," said Prof. van Riet Lowe. "For this reason the discoveries were invaluable as a means of finding out more about man's ancestors. It has been known for some time that this part of Africa had a high rainfall sev- eral hundred years ago. Living con- ditions here were very comfortable for primitive man." The valleys of the Riet River and middle Orange River, and in north- erm Cape district contained more traces of prehistoric man than any other part of the world, he said. The sequence of deposits in differ- ent strata in this area embraced man's history over a period of 200,- 000 to 300,000 years. Near Fauresmith, in Orange Free State, two small cuttings revealed there were literally hundreds of thousands of stone implements in the area. A detailed study of the implements will be made at the University of the Witwatersrand. Professor van Riet Lowe said he thought that it now would be pos- sible to send collections of these prehistoric tools to institutions throughout the world. South Africa had been occupied as long as any area where primitive man was known to exist, he said. 'While the recent discoveries were the biggest and most valuable ever . made, other parts of the Union had even earlier traces of stone age inhabitants, particularly along por- tions of the Vaal River bed. It was probable that man originated in equatorial Africa a million or more years ago. It was certain, he said, that there was no time in South Africa's his- tory, from the arrival of the first man onwards, when it had not been inhabited by humans. The find- ings on the two farms were even further proof of this.
