Britain Invades U.S. Auto Market To Snare Dollars By RADAR WINGET New York--(AP) -- The British are invading the United States again--this time with automobiles. This spring will see at least nine major British manufacturers offer- ing immediate 'delivery of cars sell-. ing from $1,500 to $150,000. In ad- dition, . there. are half a dozen French end Italian makes for sale in small numbers. Never before have the British come into the American market with such high hopes of gaining a share of coveted dollars. And those in the motor trade say never before have they had such an 'of ity to go home with a comparatively fat pocketbook. The, latest bidder is Sir William Rootes with the Hillman Minx. He and his brother, Sir Reginald, made 16 per cent of all bombers in Bri- tain during the war. And many an Americin soldier in a jeep was crowded off the narrow European roads by one of Sir William's largé" scout cars. Rootes recently introduced the | 40-horsepower, 156 inch long Hill- | man Minx to America in the ball- | room of & swank hotel facing Cen- tral Park. Sir. Willlam says dealers 39 states have made inquiries, pés. to place his car solely dea handling non-competi- tive American automobiles. It ells for between $1800 and $2000. Austin Motor Company with a 40-horsepower car selling for as low as $1,500 entered the American field last fall and built up an or- "IMG. ganization of 90 dealers. Ford Motor Company, British af- filiate, of the American Ford Com- pany, also is entering the United | States with a low-horsepower car | selling at about the same price as | its American cousin. In addition to these three popu- larly priced cars, the British are ex- Guaranteed @® Asphalt Shingling ® Built-Up Flat Roofing ® Materials and Work- manship Guaranteed! BIRD . . But the British car has got it here. Before the long waiting lists for American makes get back to nor- mal, British manufacturers hope to woo away many millions of dollars. Britain needs the dollars with spec- fal urgency now on the eve of the beginning of Marshall Plan aid. 'The need is so great' that 756 per cent of the Rootes production of Hillman Minx must be exported. Sir Willlam says production rates in his converted war plants call for 500 cars daily "when materials are available." C. K. CAMERON ELECTRIC POUNDED IN 1913 BY A. o.
