The court sentenced two men and five women to life imprison- ment. Seven men and one woman drew lighter sentences. Thirty- eight men and six women were found innocent. The 'defendants were among a group of guerrillas captured after the Communist-led insurgents bom- barded this second city of Greece. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the Greek Army has established a new defense program to protect Salonika. A United States military source said the city may be at- tacked by 2,000 to 3,000 guerrillas in the next few weeks. The Salonika sources gave this description of guerrilla prepara- tions: Large numbers of guerrillas have been massed near the Greek fron- tier in Yugoslavia and Albania. Six divisions of the Fifth Yugoslav Army also have been stationed in the area. While the ranks are filled with veteran Greek guerrillas, the units are led by non-Greek officers in- cluding Albanian mercenaries. Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria are stockpiling tilitary supplies for eventual use by the guerrillas in zones near Greece. Civilians have been forbidden to enter those areas, Col. Robert B. Deans of New York City today advised the United Nations special committee on the Balkans that his U.N. observation group was subjected to machine- gun fire from Albanian soil yes- terday. The group was watching the border about 27 miles north- 56 | west of Ioannina. GHEST PRICES PAID FOR PAPER, Lv, Inayresses: iron and metals Local and out of town calls picked up free. C. Douglas. A report showed it cost $7,338,000 to provide basis hospital services -- public-ward care, nursing and all but the most expen. sive drugs and medicine -- for the 142,366 patients discharged from hospitals after treatment during 1047. . Under the plan all residents pay an annual $5 tax, with a ximum of $30 a family, which entitles them to free hospital care as long as their doctor deems it necessary: 'Annual cost of the plan was esti. mated at $0.40 per capita.
