Although Victor Mature is in favor of pictures filmed with the document- ary technique, he finds it rather hard on the actors Mature id just completed "Kiss of Death," the new Twentieth Century- Fox dramatic thriller opening Monday at the Regent Theatre, and in which he is starred with Brian Donlevy and beautiful newcomer Coleen Gray, Fal lowing the realistio, on-the-spot shoot ing technique first used with such out- standing results in "House on 92nd Street, "13 Rue Madeleine" and '"'Boom- erang," all of the scenes for "Kiss of Death' were shot in New York City and its environs in actual settings which included Bellevue Hospital, The Tombe, Sing. Courts Bullding and Sing hing was fine," explains Vic, "until after the scene in which I was shot. From then on, it became a little too realistic. They wheeled me into the emergency ward at Bellevue where I could smell the ether and antiseptics, and se? other stretchers they were wheeling down the corridors that were not carrying extras. "When a real nurse popped that an- esthetic gadget over my mouth and told me to breathe deep, I really thought I had been shot. The next day's filming took place in a cell at The Tombs, which Vic found even more depressing. "I sat behind prison bars all day, and it took a keeper with a special key to.get me out. We couldn't start shoot- ing until ten in the morning when they move out the real prisoners, and the guy whose cell I took over looked SiuLy worried when they took him up cou Too Much Like Real Thing "After that, they moved me up to the HA pen, an {ron cage outside the m, where the prisoners wait unt thelr cases are called, The iron bench I sat on was still warm." When, after this scene, Vic was tried in Part IX of the Criminal Courts, he seemed worried and nervous. He didn't know any of the actors when he came into the courtroom (Producer Fred Kohlmar recruited many players ap- pearing on the Broadway stage), so Vic couldn't be re whether he was being "tried" before a real judge or a mem- ber of the Screen, Actor's Guild. The following day, Vic was taken 'up the river" to Sing Sing, still handcuffed to a guard, because this train ride is also in the picture. "After a week in Sing Sing," explains Mature, "with scenes in the cells, the machine shops and in the visitors' room, always surrounded by real crim- inals and guards, I be heebie-jeebles. If I lool ried in 'Kiss of Death', acting, After what I've seen a been' through, I'm going to be a good boy from now on. Even now, after those real court and prison sequences, I feel that I'm just out on probation." TODAY Biltmore--*"Follow That Woman" 12.40, 3.07, 5.32, 7.59, 10.26.
