EDMOND ELLA Adult Entertainment O'BRIEN - RAINES- BENDIX PRICE WILLIAM VINCENT Eogle-Lion Films presents FRANCHOT LUE TODAY Canada's Theatre Nearing Maturity Says Adjudicator By FRED KERNER Canadian Press Staff Writer Toronto, Jan. 19--(CP)--Firm in his convictions that legitimate theatre in Canada is on the brink of full maturity, British-born actor and director Robert Stuart has started on his Dominion.wide tour of adjudication preliminary to the ninth Dominion Drama Festival, "Canadian theatre is in .its late adolescence," the regional festival adjudicator sald in an interveiw prior to leaving for Halifax where he judged Nova Scotia entries last week. "The main difficulty with Cana- dians is that they are too apologetic about their own work--probably be- cause Canada is next door to the United States." After six' months in Canada dur- ing which time he acted as guest director of several groups in the Maritimes and Ontario, Mr. Stuart is looking forward to the difficult task of selecting regional winners to participate in the Dominion fes- tival at Ottawa late in April. Though born in a theatrical fam- ily, Mr, Stuart did not enter the profession with the blessings of his parents, They wanted him to be- come a medical practitioner, a career he started to study for at Cambridge. . "I took the law into my own hands when I came of age," he sald. After having played Juliet in a college production of the Shake- spearean tragedy, he was bitten by the stage bug and left university to join travelling repertory company. His first bid for fame came three years later, at the age of 24, when he started a repertory theatre at Oldham, a Lancashire cotton-mill town. Comprising working people, the Oldham group was started as a club and has since grown to con- siderable fame in Britain. His entrance into the select circle of London's West End theatre dis- trict came by chance, Tiring of the organizational work involved in the Oldham group, Mr. Stuart left for London. Hardly had he set foot in Euston station, when tie met a former colleague who said the H, M. Tennants company was casting for George Bernard Shaw's "Candida." The young actor scurried over to the plush Tennants' office, read for a part and was signed to his first West End contract. Good reviews brought hope of future success but the threat of war found him called for service with the R.AF, Serving 30 operations as an air gunner, he later became a wireless operator-navigator and served & second tour, On D-Day, a Mosquito in which he was flying was shot down over France and he suffered a broken back when the ship crash. ed. Awarded a DJF.C, he spent eight months in hospital and then joined a troop entertainment group sharing leads with movie star .Rex Harrison. This is Mr. Stuart's second visit to Canada. He trained at Mount Hope, Ont., and in Prince Edward Island while with the R.AF, 2 aovenrureHITS 2 REGULAR PRICES!
