As the chimes of midnight move westward hour by hour, the advent of the New Year can be heard pro- gressing across the land, in a. tidal wave of jubilation that rolls from Halifax to Vancouver, from Wash- ington to San Francisco. This capacity of radio to link vast multitudes is never better demon- strated than on New Year's Eve. At most other times, radio is a merely mechanical transmitter that brings {he symphony, the dance, band or the theatre into the listener's own frent room, But his front room re- mains just that, and he doesn't feel any urge to join the applause of the studio audience. Not so, however, on New Year's Eve, when the chances are good that a listener in Montreal will join in an "Auld Lang Syne" sung by L happy throng in Denver. The reason these boisterous New Year's Eve programs make friends and influence people is that they don't self-consciously. try to do any such thing. Unrehearsed and full of spontaneous gaiety, they catch the spirit that enlivens people every. where on that magic midnight once a year, and broadcast it far and wide. A salute to the BBC for its cov- erage of the Royal Wedding, Nov. 20, appeared in a London news- paper recently. It read, in part: "It was fitting' that this jubilee '| manville, with Mr, | Present Silver To Couple 35 Years Wed MRS. You're practically calling me a thief!" moved a vote of thanks to the teachers, parents, scholars and caretaker Pye and all others who had helped to make the evening such a success. After recelying the treat of the evening and 'presents at the hand of dear old Santa Claus, all returned home feeling that it wad an evening well spent. During the worship service in the church here, for the last two Sun- days our minister has given a very comprehensive and interesting study of the conditions of the world before Christ came, why He came, and purpose of His work. In deal- ing with the subject he gave to us the background of prophecy in rela- tion to Christ, and he concluded his remarks last Sunday by saying that although Christmas time was a lovely time to receive and give cars and greetings, gifts, etc. yet in reality Christ did not come to get us to do these things but came and gave His life that we might be saved from our sins, He reminded that for 300 years after Christ was born, no one cele- brated his birthday, not until we be- gan to study His life teachings, miracles, healings, personality, did we become anxious to celebrate His birthday. He also sounded a bit of good advice, that perhaps we might celebrate the birthday of Christ and pass the whole day in greetings, eating and drinking and social in- tercourse without even having our guest there at all. He even went so far as to say he believed. many homes would celebrate without even asking God to bless the food that ay. The minister is afraid that with a glorified Santa Claus, tinsel, pre- sents and feasting, our children may without our direction. never .be | trought to realize that Christmas means, or should mean salvation to our souls not just amusement to our bodies. During the service a male quar- tette, Messrs. Wearn, Wright, Sle- man and Heard rendered two very fine mumbers. In a community such as Enniskillen which is filled with good singing lent, there should always be ampe! opportunity to have good music in our church. In front of the pulpit was a large basket of beautiful flowers, placed there in memory of the late Mr, Sidney Trewin, by his family, ace companing this was a note thank- ing the people for their sympathy, thought and kindness during the family's recent sad bereavement.
