PIPER Ajax, Dec. 22--On Sunday eve- 'ning a farewell presentation was 'made to Miss Gweneth Schell at ithe close of the evening service. . J. Norton presented Gwen with a Hymnary and her many friends are wishing her every suc- cess in her work as a missionary nurse in the United Church mis- sion hospital at Bela Bela, B.C. There was dignity, patriotism and a touch of solemn mourning for the dead in. the dedication of the Veterans' Hall last Wednesday evening. From the opening parade of the colors the service was mov- ing and inspiring. Fathers and mothers "of boys who died in the Great War were warmed and com- forted by the respectful salute to those who gave their lives for their country. Provincial President E. E, Evans of the Canadian Legion gave the formal opening speech, announcing the building open for good citizen- ship and for service to those who survived the two great wars and for the dependants of those who died, His speech was not long, but he lashed out at "Communists who, he said, had infiltrated injo both political parties, into service clubs and even into the Canadian Legion, He cited the recent action ' of the Calgary Branch which had expelled certain members for their allegiance to a foreign idealogy in- stead of to their King and country. The platform was crowded with distinguished visitors who came to pay their respect to the Legion and all it stands for and to congratulate the Ajax Branch on their succ::s in achieving so fine a hall entirely free of debt. As well as President Evans there were Mrs, L. Long, Provincial Vice-President of the Ladies Auxiliary, District Com- - mandér Frank Threadgold, zone commander J. Lovell and several branch presidents. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a corsage tc Mrs. J. Mills, the retiring president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Mills has been president of the local aux- 'iliary ' sifice' its inauguration aud is retiring now under her doctor orders. Legion members also pre- sented a beautiful table to Presi- dent John Mills as a token of their appreciation of his untiring work for the Legion. could only say "I thank you--I can sdy no more." Mayor Davidson of Whitby, in his brief address said that it was his understanding that eventually the entire plant of the Dunlop Tire and Public Rubber Co. would be moved to Whitby and would employ over 2,000 men and women. Kelly Creighton K.C., M.L.A., of Oshawa said that the future of Ajax had been discussed in top On- tario Government circles, within the past two weeks and that the Pro- vincial Cabinet was intensely in- terested in the village. President Mills acted as chairman of the meeting and saw to it that no speeches were too long. He him- self gave a brief history of the Local Branch and of the gallant struggle to erect their present hall. ""Rey. Carl Swann, Branch Chap- lain pronounced the formal dedi- cation and Mrs. Jean Severs sang "Bless This House." Following the speeches a short concert was held, refreshments served and the floor given over to «dancing. It was a happy evening. With Keith Rudkin as chairman, the following delightful program was presented: 'Christmas Wel- come", Diane Wilson; "Welcome", Billy Asling; "Guess What Day?" by 9 pupils; levely little Dutch folk dance 'by grades 1, 2 and 3; carols, "Away In A Manger" and "Santa Claus Ezoress"; recitations, "My Letter", by Doris Chambers, "Se- crets", by Ann Baldwin, "My Say", by Sally Dingman, "Just Suppose", by Keith Kaine; "A Dear Little Goose", by Jacqueline Cubbage, and "Family Traits", by Jimmie Thom- son. Song, "Good King Wenscelas", Jr: 3 pupils; a number of selections by Rhythm Band of Grs. 1, 2 and 3 pupils. A very amusing play by Room 2, "Pumpkinville Christmas Concert"; a lovely drill, "Alice Blue Gown"; chorus, "Christmas Caval- cade", Room 3 presented the play, "Dress Rehearsal", a gorgeous "Dance of the Fairies", and carols by grades 7 and 8. Mr. Croxall led in a sing- song of carols and the play, "Paul Splits An Atom", concluded a very fine program. The costumes for the drill and dances were worthy of mention, being very lovely indeed, The Sunday School room was packed on Sunday morning for the wonderful open session in which the Christmas story was shown in colored slides, Christmas music and singing of carols. There was a white gift service included, the "gifts" to go to buy food for Britain. The Sunday School entertain- ment will be held on Tuesday even- ing at 8 pum. The annual meeting of the Sun- day School will be held on Monday, Dec. 29, in the evening. "Simply Lovely" was the remark heard on all sides, after the presen- tation of the pageant, "The First GREETINGS! Near. by friends, missing her, entered her home and found her unconscious. She was taken to Oshawa Hospital where she was revived. The fumes were from a coal stove in her home.
