Lee 403, D1! 5% | Sports Roundup | New York; Dec. 24--(AP)--As is our wont, it being a very economi- cal way of expressing Oe yuletide spirit, we this year again confine our giving to advice, sympathy and understanding, realizing the advice will not be taken, the sym- pathy is unwanted, and the under- will be misunderstood. > Anyway, here's 'a stocking full: Joe Louis--Don't jeopardize the great esteem in which you are held by belittling Jersey Joe Walcott and hinting you might not meet him in June. Bilence, in your case, is gol- en. : Jersey Joe Walcott--When you do Soinething you think is prett; ood and nearly everyone else t! pretty good, but the two you By to think it is good, don't, that's not 50 good. So you have a t to feel 22 | downcast over losing the decision to Joe Louis because a couple of jud- ges couldn't be convinced. Leo Durocher--you're getting your big chance. Keep a civil ton- gue and behave like a gentleman and you'll have the critics swinging over to your side. Crood guys do win pennants. Burt Shotton--it's tough to build | & mansion then have someone come along and say, "pardon me, but this is my lot." Everyone appreciates the fine job you did with the Dod- . | gers, and respects you for the way you quietly stepped aside for the . | return of Durocher . Floyd Bevens--We know how it would be to be drolling for a piece of ple, then have it splatter on the floor just when Lp? were ready to take a bite, sp we iate how you felt , when Lavagetio dropped that ninth-ipnning ' double against the right field wall to ruin your world series' no-hit game. Ted Willlams--You led the Amer- ican League in just about every- thing offensively, so you probably" wonder just what a fellow has to do to be rated most valuable player. You took it like a man, though. We've all had similar disappoint- ments. St. Louis Browns--Nobody seems to appreciate you are trying to build with youth. We know what it would be like to have everybody cri- ticizing every move we make. It's your busiiess, anyway. | And if it's any of our business, we wish everyone A Merry Christ mas. Spicy Bits From Other Sports Cols. By ARCH MacKENZIE Canadian Press Staff Writer Winnipeg, Dec. 24 (CP)--The old-timers may mutter that things are coming to a pretty pass but the dea that Winnipeg Blue Bombers ve a ladies! auxiljary--at $10 -& head--is catching on Wat fast. Bombers, who came near the Canadian rugby crown .this year, currently are conducting a mem- bership campaign and one of those who believe women should be ad- mitted to, the hitherto. exclusively male organization--the club, not the team, which presumably will con- tinue exclusively male--is Tony (Winnipeg Tribune) Allan. Gals May Join Club This is his opinion: "The Bomber players demon- strated this year that it is possible to play winning football without overdoing the hammy, rough-and- tough he-man act--on or off the gridiron. We don't know what some of the old-timers will think but the club membership . has decided to abandon its - hair-on-the-chest ex- clusiveness. In other word, there is nothing to prevent female fans from becoming members of the club, provided, of course, they kick through with 10 bucks. "Certainly, if there had been a ladies' auxiliary of the Winnipeg rugby club in 1946, the Bombers never would have been permitted to take the field in the east-west final in those disgraceful ragged sweat- ers, abcut which there was so much ado in the eastern papers. "No fooling, there are lots of ways in which the gals can help." Days of Yore Every once in a while someone comes up with the declaration that hockey 'isn't what it used to be-= and no compliment is intended. Maurice (Free Press) Smith writes about one of these cases and the complainant is Art Somers, former N.H.L. -player who replaced Harry Neal as coach of the Winnipeg Black Hawks. . {Chicago fans Hawks Pull Upset Of The Season Dump Rangers 7-1 By The Canadian Press It may be a little early yet, but who watched the Black Hawks in action last might are ready to proclaim the Nation- al Hockey League stumblebums 'of the last few months as a possi- ble "sleeper" when the chips are down next spring. " Boasting five wins in their first 25 games, the Hawks took on New York Rangers -- the team that was knocking the op- position for a loop in early De- cember -- and cooled out the blueshirts with a 7-1 trimming, Great Gesture It was a pretty gesture toward Chicago Coach Johnny Gottseélig, who cogched the club to a dreary last-place finish last season and will hand over the reins to Char- lie Conacher next week. Johnny will be even happier in his new role as general manager if his boys take a reef in the third- place Bruins in Boston tomorrow night. Another smiling face in the Chicago camp belonged to rookie Metro Prystai, a one-man team with the Moose Jaw Canucks last season when the western' club reached the Canadian junior fi- nals. Works Well Armed with a heavy file of pres clippings and the sure-fire nickname of "Marvellous," Pry- stai has been considerably less than a ball of fire with the Chi- cago Clup this season, but last night he rammed home two goals within 30 seconds and rounded out the evening with a spirited brawl that sent him and Ranger forward Tony Leswick to the | cooler with major penalties. Veteran 'Red Hamill was ano- ther 'double scorer for the Hawks, while George Gee and Roy Con- acher were the other goal-getters. Grant Warwick was the lone New York markman, Other Action Other. Christmas eve action pits the third:place Rangers against Detroit. Red Wings at Detroit while Toronto Maple Leafs travel to, Montreal to tase on the fourth-place Canadians. The lea- i Bue-leading Leafs need a win to protect their - 'one-point margin over the" fast-closing Detroiters, while Boston," New York and Montreal, ~ separted = by - single points, could shuffle the stand- ings. Leafs and Canadiens will be short-handed as ace forward Maurice Richard sits it out for the Montrealers with a leg imjury and big Harry Watsca leaves his first-string left wing spot for the Leafs to nurse a bad knee, ingly irrevocably--are bringing up the rear of the Manitoba Junior "A" association and it may be that that 'has embittered Art. Anyway, says Smith, hockey--and junior hockey in particular -- has changed a lot according to Somers, When he was starring with Winni- peg Falcons, first local team to win the Memorial Cup, the players ate, slept and drank hockey. It always was uppermost in their minds. "Ain't It the Truth? " "But today," he quotes Somers as lamenting, "you go into a dressing room and, what do you find? All you hear the kids talking about is the dance they attended the night before or the girl they are going to take out tomorrow night. The last thing they appear to have on their minds is the game on hand. "Why even the pros seem to have more interest in winning their games than a good many of the The Hawks presently--and seem- junior players you run into."
