The South Marysburgh Mirror 8 Roots and Wings St. Philip Anglican Church By Elizabeth Hill The shocking discovery of 215 unmarked little graves at the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia brings such sorrow to our hearts. And what is even more grievous is that this discovery isn’t anything unexpected, and we brace ourselves for even more startling revelations in the future. Shining a light on the horrors of the past may be the first step in reconciliation, but first we must grieve. To that end, St. Philip’s Anglican Church held a special ser- vice in memory of these children who died at the residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. Led by Fr. Don Da- vidson, our priest-in-charge, the service was held outdoors at St. Philip’s, with residents of Milford and members of St. John’s Waupoos, St. Andrew’s Wellington and South Bay United invited to attend, and many came. The church bell, which was a gift from the St. Philip’s Sunday School in 1922, was rung 215 times. People quietly lined up to take their turn, it was very moving. As would be expected, COVID-19 protocols were in place — with attendees socially distanced and wearing masks. And now we are called. Called to listen. Called to hear — even and especially when what is being said is heartbreaking. And called to act. 613-962-1144 + eben Lid rene to assist you with Ontario provincial programs and services Canada was given a roadmap with the Truth & Reconcilia- tion Commission’s 94 calls to action, to address the ongoing impact of residential schools on survivors and their families. We are called to hold ourselves, each other, and our elected officials accountable to move forward and implement these calls to action. This is not all that is needed, but it is a good start. Our world, our hearts, our lives, are changed forever. Stay tuned to this column on what we intend to do with this change. Bay of Quinte Constituency office: 5503 Hwy 62 S, Belleville, Ont.
