When they are ready to they will crawl to the end of a stalk of grass, put out feed, socks. their front legs and look to catch a ride! 2. Wear light coloured clothing and tuck pant legs into 3. Use chemical repellent on skin. Icaridin is more effec- (cid:415)ve at repelling (cid:415)cks than DEET is, and not as smelly or greasy. Clothing can be treated with Permethrin spray. This is very effec(cid:415)ve and will last through sev- eral washes. Not available in Canada but can be pur- chased easily in the USA. Clothing that is ready treat- ed with Permethrin is available at Mark's warehouse. 4. When you come in from outdoor ac(cid:415)vi(cid:415)es. Use a lint roller to pick up (cid:415)cks from clothing. Place clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10-15 minutes. 5. Do full body (cid:415)ck checks daily. If you do find a (cid:415)ck DO NOT try and remove it by using Vaseline, a lit match, grabbling it round it's mid- dle or twis(cid:415)ng it. Anything that stresses the (cid:415)ck will cause it to regurgitate its stomach contents into you and increase the risk of infec(cid:415)on. Take fine (cid:415)pped tweezers, grasp the (cid:415)ck by the mouth parts, very close to the skin and pull ver(cid:415)cally and slowly. Figures from HPE Public Health show that in 2013 16% of (cid:415)cks carried Lyme disease. In 2015 it was 31% (an almost 50% increase in two years). At that point they stopped tes(cid:415)ng the (cid:415)cks, so we have no idea what the current percentage is, except it is like to be higher. Save the Tick! have been removed from a pa(cid:415)ent. There is an alterna(cid:415)ve op(cid:415)on, and that is to send the (cid:415)ck to a private laboratory near Lindsay, Ontario. They will tests the (cid:415)ck for two species of Lyme bacteria ($50), and also offer tes(cid:415)ng for three other infec(cid:415)ons that are spread by (cid:415)cks in the NE USA and Canada ($150). Results come in 1-2 weeks. The Health Unit no longer tests the (cid:415)cks a(cid:332)er they 3 So SAVE THE TICK! Place it in a Ziploc bag and put it in the freezer to get tested at a later date if you develop symptoms, or send it off straight away and find out if the (cid:415)ck was carrying Lyme. Our support group have already directed people to get their (cid:415)cks tested and the posi(cid:415)ve results have helped them to seek appropriate medical a(cid:425)en(cid:415)on.
