THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE THURSDAY, JUNE '5, 1947 PAGE FOURTEEN 7 Things Are Quiet- In Soap-Box Row Of Sydney Domain Written For The Canadian Press By LEONE KIRKWOOD Sydney, Australia--(CP)--Things dre quieter now in Sydney Domain. In the Hyde Park of Australia, where tempers once ran high and a successful week-end was meas- ured in terms of 40-odd disorderly conduct charges against spectators and orators, cabinet ministers no longer mount the rostrum to ex- pound government policy to the electorate But while the crowds no longer number from 80,000 to 100,000 as they did 10 years ago, the big open- air park still has-its attractions, A great crowd gathers around a self-styled masseur known as King Hoffman. A heavy-set, red-faced individual, Hoffman guarantees to grow Ziew hair on beaut ison ni cure a wide range of ailments in- cluding infantile paralysis and fal- len arches, by applying his "healing hands." His hoarse voice explaining purification of the blood stream is W. L. Borrowdale "The Oil Burner Man" Immediate Installation. After leaving Hoffman, the crowd usually gathers around a four-foot- six-inch man known as "The Tiger" who calls himself a "mass pyscholo- gist and full-blooded elocutionist." Wearing an old frock with his long hair hanging over the collar, he drinks "voice oil" from a small bottle' and solicits pennies from the spectators by reciting ditties. Oc- casionally he lapses into bar-room jokes, but then New South Wales police step in. But the darling of the crowd is a Greek house decorator, Tony Phil- lips, who has formed a one-man political party to save the world. Tony calls his political creed "Atok- ism" and has unsuccessfully con- tested a seat for parliament five times, Hecklers operate on a subtle level with Tony. When he exhorts his listeners to march with him to Par- liament House in Canberra, they shout, "Sure Tony, we're with you." Tony believes interest should not be | charged on bank loans and that all homes should be rent-free. A slim, gentle man, neatly-clad, he holds the crowd with his good humor. The fourth popular speaker is Mrs. N. Green of a minor religious group. She is a thin, middle-aged woman with sharp features who ex= horts her audience to be "saved." These are the four drawing cards of the Domain, although other lesser lights also deliver themselves of their beliefs. The Domain has been a public- speaking place since the early days of settlement in Australia: The only restriction applied since the park first opened in 1831: Speech must not be "unseemly or likely to cause disturbance or riot." PLAN WARNING BEACONS Dublin, Eire -- (CP) -- Sixty gale warning stations, to increase aid to shipping, are to be established on commanding points along the Irish coast. WOMEN ARE MORE INTERESTING (Collier's Magazine) The extent to which interest in women as a Sex surpasses that in men may be guaged by a recent study of the index of one of Amer- ica's largest public libraries. Ex- cluding biographies, only 446 books were listed under the general sub- ject of "men," while 10,625-- or 24 times as many--were listed under "woman" and 'women." Hidden Menace To Poultry Flock The harmful effects of lice and mites on poultry mot being im- mediately visible, their presence is often not detected until large numbers of them exist, At the Dominion Experimental Station at Harrow, Ont., frequent examinations of the birds and fixtures for the pests have prov- ed that eradication is fairly sim- ple when carried out during the early stages of infestation, The common body louse inhab- its the area around the vent of the bird and usually the egg clus- ters of the insects can be seen adhering to the base of the ab- | dominal feathers of the birds: Mites prefer to spend the day on the under side of the roosts or in cracks or nail holes in the building, making nightly visits to the resting fowl to feed. Because of the different habits of the pa- rasites, methods of control must vary accordingly. A smear of nicotine suphate, a half inch wide along the top of the roost put on before dark, will rid most of the birds of lice. Of course, to get the benefit of the delousing every bird must be on the roost. Heavy infestations may require a repeat application, A small quantity of blue ointment smeared on the skin around the vent of the bird is an effective treatment, though taking more time, Blue ointment should not be used when eggs are required for hatching. Sodium fluoride dusted nto the feathers is still another way of exterminating lice. The poisonous nature of these insecticides requires cau- tious handling. Slow drying, 4 bearing sprays are usually recommended as a treatment against the so called red mite, Crude carbolic, used motor oil, or any "disinfectant having a creosote base, diluted with kerosene-should he sprayed forcibly into the places where the mites are lurking. Because mites multiply at a rapid rate, a thor. { ough coverage is advised, RHEUMATIC PAIN and Stiffness 35¢ Ro ILA size 65¢C LI NIME NT GENERAL MOTORS DELCO-HEAT AUTOMATIC HEATING EQUIPMENT OIL BURNERS -- COAL STOKERS May be financed out of Income by the Convenient G.M.A.C, Payment Plan : FINE QUALITY COAL - COKE - FUEL OIL THE ROBERT DIXON COMPANY LIMITED 313 ALBERT ST.
