Wedded Life If Mrs. T. J. Shortt, Centre Street, were to reduce the require- ments for a happy married life to just two, she would doubtless say: "Share an outdoor hobby with your husband" and "Vow never to quar- rel." Mrs, Shortt has good ground for these convictions for she and her husband celebrated their 50th wed- ding anniversary last Sunday. They both work in their lovely garden all thelr spare time, she says and adds, "We haven't many idle moments," To their garden she gives credit for both of them hav- ing such good health, Mr. Shortt's special hobby is dah- lias and hers is lilies, she reveals, The horticultural magazine they take this year--they always sub- scribe for one--specializes in lilies end she has learned a great deal from it, she says with satisfaction, Roses In November Her garden, she remarked apolo- getically yesterday, as she stood in what the reporter thought one of the loveliest gardens she has seen in Oshawa, is rather bare just now as the earlier flowers are past and the chrysanthemums are just be- ginning to bloom. In spite of that, the reporter, noticing beautiful ros- es, was told roses bloomed there last November, ' In the garden is a pretty lly pond with goldfish 'flashing in the sunshine, At the rear of the gare den is a breast-high prism through which one can see marvellous color effects, especially at sunset, says Mrs, Shortt, As for the second part of her prescription for a happy life, she says that vow which she and her husband made can be kept for they have done so. The parents of Mr. and Mrs, Shortt all came to Oshawa from Devonshire, England, in the 1870's when he was 18 months old and be- fore she was born, Although the parents had known each other in England, she and her future huse band, however, did not know each other even by sight until they met at an Epworth League garden party in their teens. At Same Sunday School Although Mr, Shortt's family was Anglican, he went with his chums to the old Metcalfe Street Methoe dist Sunday School, Mrs. Shortt sald, and so did she, In those days, the boys sat on one side, the girls on the other and apparently they did not show much interest in each other--or at least, a certain boy and girl didn't, "Young people today are different from what we were," declares Mrs. Shortt but with no regret in her tone for she adds, "but they are no worse for it. They just have differ ent ideas of a good time." Verses on gift cards aren't al- ways suitable but the card which accompanied the gift from the neighbors last Sunday expressed the truth, Mr, and Mrs. Shortt believe, It said: "Congratulations to a wondeyful pair Who learned to live and love and share, Our thanks for proving it can be done : If you marry the right and only one." "We have the com- panionship and the atmosphere of a home but we all go our own way when we feel like it, That's the se- cret." Another girl told a reporter that "everything is first-come, first-ser- ved. Whoever has the chesterfield first has it for the evening."
