(72a) Dressmaking DRESSMAKING AND ALTERA- tions done at 110 Alice St. (3Nov.c) That Body of Yours By James W. Barton, M.D, Some months ago I attended a symposium (a number of short speeches) on headache. I write fre- quently about headache and of the great number of causes for head- ache. Already about 150 causes have been found by physicians. As eye strain has always been considered a very frequent cause of headache, I was surprised when the four speakers and the eye specialists in the assembly said little or nothing about headache due to eyestrain. Fortunately eyestrain as a cause of headache came up amid the questions and answers and the | chairman and others admitted that while there seemed to be a head- ache due to eye strain about an inch above the eyes, and at the back of the head, nevertheless it could be due to other conditions besides eye strain or other disturb- | ances of the eye. However, a pain | in the eye or eyes was considered | a fairly common result of eye- | strain, This means then that in looking or the cause of headache, dis-| turbances of the eye or eye strain | strain is not as common a cause as was thought, What, then, are signs and symp- toms of eye strain or eye defects? Persistent pain in the eyes them- selves, persistent flow of tears, dimness or blurring of vision, in- flammation of the eyes and lids, itching or swelling of the lids, are the usual symptoms. "Persistent | scowl or a tendency to hold a book | too close or too far from the eyes are common signs of eye disturb- ance." In most cases where eye symp- | toms are present, there is a ten- dency to first visit an oculist or | optometrist. In a great many cases the oculist or optometrist | will refer the patient to the family physician as the symptoms are not due to any eye condition or eye- strain, but to a disturbance else- | where in the body. It would be | wise, therefore, when eye symp- toms occur to visit your family | physician who in turn may advise you to sce your dentist before con- sulting an eye specialist or optom- etrist, The point then is that headache is not the outstanding in eye de- fects and. that when headache or even eye symptoms themselves are present, the family physician and WINS DAMAGE SUIT Eldon Woman Gets $3,900 For Husband's Death Lindsay, Oct. 11 -- Mrs. John Spence, Eldon Township, was given | $3,900 damages by Maurice Sulli- | van, of Arnprior, when her suit in connection with the death of her husband came before the Supreme Court Assizes here Wednesday, The case was settled out of court. The jury found the boy died immediately from injuries received when run over by the rear dual wheel of a truck driven east- ward by Mr. Keetch on Francis Street, The truck driver testified he had known nothing of the accident until he felt a slight bump from the rear of his truck. He stopped immedi- ately and discovered his rear wheel had passed over the boy. Father is Witness Father of the victim, Richard Buck, was called as an eye-witness of the fatality. He said he had been | sitting in his parked car across the street from the point where his son was killed, waiting for a passenger in a nearby store. He declared he saw his boy approaching on the bicycle, and jumped out of his car and ran across the street when he saw Delbert fall under the truck. Eleven-year-old Anna Elizabeth Bedore testified sh2 had been stand- ing five feet from the boy at the time of the accident. She said the cyclist started to fall and put ou: his hand to seize the truck as it passed by. He missed his hold and fell in front of the rear wheel. Kenneth Cummings, 295 Olive Avenue, Oshawa, driver of a second truck owned by the same company, stated he had been following Mr. Keetch at a distance of about one hundred feet. "I saw the boy on the bicycle as Keetch passed him. He was wavering a bit, and ap- parently couldn't ride very well, He | fell sideways toward the truck and went under the rear wheel. The bicycle skidded to the south and was not damaged. Joseph Cannon, of Trenton, was also called as a material witness. Mr. Cannon said he was driving past the scene in a westerly direction when he saw the truck passing the young cyclist. Hearing a crash he stopped and returned to the scene. The truck driver had stopped his vehicle within a few feet, the wit- ness said. Dr. E. A. McQuade presided as coroner, with 8. Gordon Robertson, acting Crown Attorney, examining Victor Ryan was foreman of the jury which was com. posed of William Heaney. Samuel John Kinney, James Re- | dick and Ralph Weaver. Legion Will Help Educate Thousands Of Men Under Arms Ottawa, Oct, 11--Canadian Legion War Services has announced that its fall and winter program of edu- cation among the forces at sea, on land and in the air, is now under way and that applications are be- ing received from men in all parts of the Dominion who wish to take up or to continue studies in acad- emics and vocations. According to Lieut.-Col, Wilfrid Bovey, O.B.E, of Montreal, nation- al chairman of the Legion's mili tary education division, negotiations conducied during the summer have resulted in the wholehearted co= . operation of every provincial de- partment of education, and scores of prominent educationists and qualified instructors have offered their services on an honorary basis. It is anticipated that between three and four thousand men under arms in Canada alone, with hundreds more stationed in Great Britain, Newfoundland and Iceland, will be« come enrolled as students for the new study lesson. Col. Bovey said it was expected that a Legion education officer would leave shortly for England to re-establish classes among the Ca= nadian forces overseas. He pointed out there would be a great demand for such activity if Hitler confines his assaults on Britain to the air. How to Overcome Piles And Rectal Soreness If you are annoyed with itching piles or rectal soreness, do not neg= lect the same or run the risk of an operation. Any itching, soreness or painful passage of stool, is nature's warning and proper ' treatment should be secured at once. For this purpose get from Jury & Lovell or any druggist, a package of Hemroid and use as directed. This formula, which is used internally, quickly re= lieves the itching and soreness and aids in healing the sore, tender spots. Hemroid is highly recome mended, is easy to use and it seems the height of folly for anyone to risk an operation when a simple. remedy, which is so pleasant to use may be had at such a reasonable cost.
