NEW SENSATION IN BEAURARNOIS POWER INQUIRY (Continued from page 1) the beginning of 1429, the senator repeated ul vy 3 on weesey Ottawa, March 16--R. O. Sweezey president of Beauharnois, may go on the stand before the Senate Beauharnois Committee today to re- peat the denial which he gave to newspapers last night of the sen- sational evidence given by Sénator Andrew Haydon, Federal Liberal organizer, implicating him and Hon. G. Ferguson, When it assembles today the com- mittee will decide whether it shall call Mr. Sweezey or continue the adjourned testimony of Senator Wilfrid Laurier McDougald. It was reported last night that the committee might call Mr. Sweezey to get his statement before it goes back to Senator Haydon whose evi- dence, given at his hame where ill- ness confines him, is not yet com. pleted, "I! t's. a pure political dream, and I deny it categorically," declar- ed Mr, Sweezey when asked to comment upon the statement made by Senator Haydon. Mr. Sweezey, according to the senator, said he had a contract lined up with the Ontario Hydro-Eleetric Commyssicon, "> - el - Asked by the senator if this was vet signed, Mr. Sweezey was de- clared to have answered, "No, Howard Ferguson won't let it be signed until he gets $200,000," "There was no such thing as | that," Mr. Sweezey said last night. "I think Senator laydon must have had a dream. "As a matter of fact I was told this atternoon that the senator had made this statement; and | was simply astounded to hear such a thing 1 presume," added Mr. Sweezey, 'that the committee goes on to-morrow; and 1 will probably be going .into the box then." Demands Wider Inquiry _ Ottawa, March 16 -- Acclaiming Senator Haydon's evidence as proot enough for anybody, Mitchell F. Hepburn, provineial Liberal leader, last night demanded that Premier Henry widen the scope of the roy al commission inquiry on Hydro now proceeding in Toronto Mr. Hepburn took a cynical view of the denial issued last night by R. O. Sweezey, Beauharnois presi- dent, regarding Senator Haydou's evidence. Mr. Sweezey denied that, as Senator Haydon testified, Hon. G. Howard Ferguson had named a £200,000 contribution to the Ontario Conservative campaign fund as the price of the Iydro's Beauharnois power contract. "Anybody can see," Mr. Hepburn said, "that Sweezey is on the spot." This view of Mr. Sweezey's denial was borne out by Mr. Hepburn in his press statement on the matter. The statement follows: "The statement of Senator Hay: don is further proof of the necessity of a full investigation and Premier Henry should take immediate ad- vantage of the opportunity to wid. ¢n the scope of the Hydro inquiry." Furore in Toronto Toronto, Mar. 16--The statement attributed to Senator Andrew Hay- don, that Oliver Sweezey of the Beauharnois Syndicate had said Hon, G. Ferguson had demanded $200,000 Yor a power contract, creat ed a furore in legislative circles last night. In lobbics and corridors, conversation on the Beauharnois development surmounted all consid- eration of the budget debate which waged to and fro till midnight, with the rumor that it would result in discussion of the situation to-day. Late in the evening the rumor de- veloped that either W. E. N. Sin- clair, Liberal: leader, or Harry N. Nixon, Progressive chieftain, would move adjournment of the House to- day to discuss the situation and urge that because of it the Hydro probe should be widened to include investigation of the $125,000 pay- ment to John Aird, Jr. DEMONSTRATION TRAINS BENEFIT T0 THE FARMERS C.N.R. and Governments of Provinces Work In Co-operation Montreal, March 15.--Nearly 30,000 farmers in Ontario, Que- hec, Saskatchewan and British Columbia benefitted directly last year through ths operation of four agricultural demonstration trains by the Canadian National Rallways working in co-opération with the various provincial gov- ernments. These trains aro vir. tually travelling colleges and are fitted with charts, samples and experimental apparatus and are manned by technical agricultur- alists, their main purpore being to improve farming methods in the Dominion. Bach train is devoted to the study of one or two specific prob. lems, including the breeding, feeding and management of live- stock, the use of clean ered, the management of field crope, the use of fortilizers and farm econ- omies. Particular emphasis was placed last year in Quebec on the use of crushed agricultural |ime- stone as a rofl improver. Invest|- gations conducted by the Depart. ment, of Agriculture of the Cana. dian National Railways have shown that the productivity of Quebec soils has {mproved very little In recent rears and that erop vields In many districts have been exceedingly low, par- ticularly in the older communities where farming has been practiced for a number of years. One of the primary causes of this unsatisfactory condition is eof! acidity, which can be cheaply and effectively corrected by the use of crushed limestone. As a result of the work of the Quebec soil improvement train, the use of this soil corréative in the prov. ince has increased 100 rer cent. in two years, The actual amount carried from the Quebec quarries to the farms of the province In 1931 was well over 30,000 tons; fn 1928 it was only 4,628 tons. As one means of {mpressing the farmers with the necessity of treating thelr goils for excess acld they were invited to bring Leamples of thelr own soils to the train for testing, Over 10,000 of these samples were dealt with on the spot and the farmers con- corned advised on the amount of limestone required by their own particular soils for the hest re- sults Since 1928 'Detter Farming Trains" have heen operated by the Canadian National Railways In every provines with the excep- tion of Prince Edward Island, and lectures and demonstrations conducted on the trains have been attended by no less than 134,000 farmers. Alberta exported 200 carloads of eggs last year, thus exceeding the previous record of 1924 by 50 carloades. The province also exported 88 carloads of poultry in 1931, 444 cars of copper concen trates were shipped from the Sherritt-Gordon mines to the Flin Flon gmelter In six months last year, proposed to her when she was soak- ed to the skin in a storm.
