One of the many members of the Chinese Students League of Greater New York who kave not heard from their families In China for weeks, she spoke sob- erly but feariessly of the subject of war. "Our philosophy is for peace, and for all things that grow in peace," she gaid. Chinese women are not trained to s«nd thelr hus- bands or their sons, . or their hrothers off to war. They do not think that would be greatness. It 1s not that we have fear for onr men, hut we wigh thém to ocenpy themselves in better things. . "In China, ths army is t)e low- eet occupation for man, the last one he should choosa." Champion Capadian Press Staff Writer) London, March 8.--Two of the greatest ornaments of the Lon- don stage, Miss Marie Tempest and Mies Gladys Cooper, are now appearing in new plays. Miss Marie Tempest is at the Ambas- tadorg in 'So Far and No Fa~ ther," by H., M. Harwood, who has already acheived somo suc- cess in light comedy writing. In this farce Miss Tempest is cast as a popular actress who, having parted from her husband many years earlier, is confronted with a sudden demand from her chil- dren to produce or give an ace count of their father. Unwilling to reveal the truth she invents a father, and even describes fu- reral 'details. The rest of the play is concerned with the com- plications which follow as a matter of course, Anybody who knows Miss Tempest's talent will appreciate that, given proper scope in a character of this sort, she stands rupreme. It seems open to ques- tion, though, whether in the pres- ent instance the author has dis- tlayed the craftsmanship which will allow this celehrated leading | lady a wide enough range. 'The farcical nature of the theme does not appear in the eyes of somo critics to have been handled very wirely by.the author. Miss Tem- pest however gives abounding evi | dence he has lost nothing of her own delightful] qualities. Miss Gladys Cooper has resu- at the Play- nouee with "King, Queen, Knave" also by H. M. Haywood, in colla- boration with R. Gore Browne. Plays concerning Ruritania are plentiful enough; perhaps that is one reason why several critics seem to have been a bit bored with this Jatest effort. Possibly their restiveness is aggravated be caute there is so much talking in the play, the talk mainly coming from the men. Charming as ever Mies Cooper has nothing of a spectacular role as the Princess. | According to one critic the play | "ambles along until it reaches at | the end a love scene of singular | bathos, with Gladys Cooper as- euring her Scots lover that the: beils heralding her abdication are their wedding bells." Some of | the first nighters also noted that | Leon Quartermaine had his work cut out to prevent the hero from being a dull fellow, and he had some difficulty in trying to talk like a Scot, A bitter experience attended the production of "Punchinello" «t the Globe. Produced on a mest elaborate scale, this work by John Hastings Turner, with laurence Irving as scenic and costume designer, was withdrawn after only four performances. The production had marked the return to the stage, after a three years' interval, of Laura Cowle, wife of the author. Plenty of nice things were sald on the open- ing night about Laura Cowle's acting and about the mounting of the plece, but the handling by the author of the legend of Punch, despite some shrewd cha- racter drawings here and there, proved entirely inacceptable, The minor characters also were not suitably distributed. This is easily the most spectacular stage failure in London for some time pakt, but it does no! stand alone. Within the last week or so one farce was taken off after two, and another after five perform- ances, GROWING BULBS BIG INDUSTRY Victoria, B.C.--During the part season British Columbia produced 18,422,00 bulbs, according to a survey conducted by the hortl- cultural Branch of the ment of Agriculture. The survey revealed the rapid progress being made in the bulb- growing industry and it is felt that this province will shortly be able to take care of practically the entire Canadian demand. During the year two hundred acres were devoted to this phase of agriculture and Vancouver Is- land and the adjacent Gulf Is- lands produced more than 9,000. 000 bulbs of various kinds, with narcisei taking the lead. Os the mainland the bulk of the bulb production is located in the Fraser Valley and near Vancou- ver. lesser extent In the Depart- Eaton Groceteria It Pays To Shop Here Always | Royal York pelea i 28 Superior Stores Bulbs are also grown to a | Okanagan | Valley and the Kootenay district. | We buy Old Gold and Silver We repair anything bought in a Jewelry Store BASSETT'S Jewelers On Oshawa's Main Corner AUTO Loans an CARS REFINANCED Can be arranged at lowest prevailing rates, covering a period up to twelve months to pay while you drive your car, CAMPBELL AUTO FINANCE CO., LTD, Disney Block, King St. E.
