The new idea, first tried out in this country on a large scale in the engine installation of the airship R-101, has been developed in two vears of rescarch and experiment | to the point of suitability for use in aeroplanes For several months fast day bombers driven by evapor- atively cooled motors have flown on trial, and conclusive results are ex- { pected in. favor of the new system from a final series of experiments now taking place, which are ex- pected in favor of the new system from a final series of experiments now taking place, which, are ¢ngag- ing, in addition to the craft orig- nally fitted, two' new high-speed night bombing 'planes and a large multi-engined flying boat, Evaporative, or "steam" cooling substitutes for the large honeycomb radiator needed in the water-cbol- ing svstém a condenser mounted above the engine, preferably within the thickness of the acroplane wing. Watér circulates endlessly within the cylinder jackets and through a "header" tank which is suitably lo- cated between engine and conden- ser, Steam from the tank rises to the condenser, where it ig cooled again to the liquid state before re- turning to the engine circuit, Big advantages are claimed. Much less water is required; the weight saving in a 5 h.p. motér may amount to as much as 100 pounds. The machine would be less vulner- able in war-time. Many a pilot's life was jéoparidized during the 1914-1918 conflict by a' fullet hole in the water radiator through which poured the liquid safeguarding the continued running of his engine. A bullet in a steam condenser has much less serious results, because the difference in the «density of steam and "water means that the rate of escape of steam by wa@ght comnared with water is only as 1 to 966, ; Points of more immediate im- portance, and bearing directly on the operation of civil as well as military aircraft, are the elimination of anxiety about engine tempera- tures, the greatly reduced risk of freezing when the machine is not in use and the quickeg warming up of engines before a flight, The engine runs always near boiling point, and the pilot need not take any steps to regulate water temperature, such as the: winding of the radiator in and out of the air stream necessary with water-cooling. HEAVY FIRING AT HONGKEW Chinese Troops Massing on New Section Against Japanese London, Feb. 2.--A Shanghai despatch to the Dally Mail today said heavy firing had broken out in the Hongkew sector of the international settlement and that a big battle was feared im- minent, Chinese troops were massing behind the north station, which they stil] held, while the Japan- ese, who occupy the Hongkew area, were pushing forward thelr outposts and reinforcing thelr troops. A despatch to the Dally Herald sald a terrific exchange of ar- tillery fire between Chinese and Japanese had broken out in the north station area. ARCHBISHOP WARNS PEOPLE Calls For Special Prayer | | conditions in particular it for Success of Peace Conference Kingston, Feb, 2. -- Most Rev. Clare L. Worrell, Anglican primate, preaching in St. George's Cathedral on Sunday asked the congregation to pray for divine guidance for those participating in the forth. coming disarmament conference at Geneva. Peonle to-ay were asking that thei: prayers be answered in the way they wished, not according to the way in which God saw fit, he commented Mention of the disarmament con- ferenze was made only as a passing reference in the primate's address. He asserted the people of the world should know more about God. There was always 4 joy and a satistaction about a task well done, he said. W'th that end in view, he urged his hearers to pray for the success of the disarmament conference. Archbishop Worrell made no re- ference to the situation at Shanghai in the course of his sermon, Felt Bros. The Leading Jeweller Established 18868 12 SIMCOE ST. SOUTH =r pe aE I a= OMI . We Deliver {GOOD PROFITS IN CANADA HAS NEED FOR TIMOTHY SEED sn Canadian production of timothy seed is still far short of domestic requirements, and in this connec- tion Geo, JM. Clark, Dominion Seed Commigfloner, observes: "Therk is evidently room for ma- terfal incase in the home produc tion of tiothy seed and there are large areas throughout the Domin- fon in which it might be produced profitably at present prices." The 1931 commercial crop of timothy seed in Canada is estimated at 1,250,000 lbs, by returns filed with the Dominion Seed Branch. Records further show that commer- cial production in recent years has not exceeded 1,500,000 lbs, while the average domestic demand has been fully 9,000,000 lbs. annually. Since 1925 Canada's importations of timothy have averaged about 8,000,000 lbs. annually, and all of this has been imported from the United States, At the present time timothy seed in Eastern Canada is bringing farmers around 9 cents per pound while the price in Western Canada is around 8 cents per pound. This price is of course controlled largely by the price at which United States exporters can lay their product down at Canadian points, and this price includes such items as the cost of the seed, transportation, {nsurance, handling charges, and | customs duty, | Both the federal and provincial | Departments of Agriculture co-operating in crop and seed in- spection services, in the supervision of threshing and cleaning opera- tions, and in the inspection of home-grown seed for certification. At the present time the bulk of Canadian production comes from Quebec, Alberta and Birtish Col- umbia, FEEDING OF STEERS Some interesting information as to the possibilities of profit in the winter feeding of steers is sup- plied by the federal Experimental Farm at Brandon, Manitoba, While | the materfal deals with prairie serves as a timely suggestion of the pos- gibilities to the rancher that win- ter labour presents, The fundamental factor in deter mining the profit or labour in- come through feeding steers is of course the spread between the price | at which suitable steers can Lo | bought at the Yard and the price realized at the time of sale. | On this basis the Brandon Exper- | imental Farm shows a profit or la- bour income per steer of $22.11 on a spread of $4.10 per cwt.; $18.13 on a spread of $2.50 per cwt.; §16.- 44 on a spread of $2.60 per cwt.; | and a profit of $1.13 on a spread of $1.60 per cwt, The winter feeding of steers is one subject to which the Experi mental Farms Branch of the fed eral Department of Agriculture has been made with respect to import- ant localities in both Eastern and Western Canada. These indicate that the opportunities for securing a substantial labour income during the winter months through the feed ing and finishing of steers of! suitable type are too great to be overlooked, Complete information with respect to every phase of the proposition is available on applica- | tion to the Department through the Publications Branch Oot tawa, at "The Scot is a tidy man" likes 'his whisky neat.
