Burgess FUN AND FISH Whe fails to have some fun each day, PE In shortened life is bound to pay. «Old Mother Nature. Like the oil that keeps an en- gine running smoothly and keeps it from wearing out before it should, fun, which is only another name for play, prolongs life en rightly used each day, No one knows this better than Little Joe Otter. That is why he builds a slippery slide down a snow-cov- cred steep bank in winter, and one of mud in summer, for slid- ing splash info the water is his favorite sport. So even in hard times when he has to.travel far to get enough fish to eat, he never fails to get in a little fun every day. "It keeps me feeling fine and good natured," says Little Joe. "and it would do the same for other people if they would try it." Old Man Coyote, who had changed his mind about attacking Little Joe, watched from his hid- ing place in a clump, of young hemlocks as Little Joe sat at the top of his slippery slide. Sud- denly Little Joe leaned forward with his arms close to his sides, gave a mighty kick and disap- peared over the edge of the high bank. Then 'Old Man Coyote heard a splash and knew that Lit- tle Joe was in the water, The sound of that splash made him shiver, for he knew how cold that water was. "He crept out of his hiding place and trotted over to where he could see that slippery slide and when Little Joe, after swim- ming down to where the bank wos low and climbing but had made his way back to the top of the slippery slide he was sitting Mrs. W. "I just happened along this way and heard a splasi™and won- dered if you were sliding today," sai® Old Man Coyote, pretending that his being there was quite accidental. "Of course, I am sliding," re- plied Little Joe promptly. "With my slide in such perfect condi- tion I would no more think of letting a day pass without using it than I would of going without my dinner. Xun is just as im- portant as food. Don't you think 80?" "Some of us sometimes have to do without either," replied Old Man Coyote a little bitterly, "I don't have much fun these days and less food." "You do look a bit thin," ad- mitted Little Joe, who was him- self sleek and plump. "I tell you what, try my slide a few times and then we will go fishing." Old. Man Coyote tried his best to grin. "I would like to,"" sald he, "but my coat isn't water- sives me the shivers whenever I lock at it, Besides, I am no more at home in the water than you would be in a treetop. As for fishing, if you will show me any place where fish can be scooped out of the water with- out any more than getting my feet wet, I will be glad to gs with you I could make use of a few fish, Yes, sir, I could do just that."
