(89b) EVERY NINTH MAN GETS HIS MOOSE IN oil SCOTIA Figures Compiled by Lands and Forests Department Show 1,428 Moose Killed Halifax, N.S. -- Every ninth hunter who goes into the woods with a rifle in the fall gets his moose. Incidence of success among the forest enthuiasts has heen pretty well established by the Department of Lands and Forests figures showing that in 1930 1,428 moose were brought down, while 12,800 big game 1i- conses were taken out. They show, also, that the number of Nova Scotlans entering the wood- lands has doubled in tht last five years. During 1925 the depart. ment. issued 5,613 resident big game jcenses. In that] year 1931 moose were killed, every sixth Lunter bagging his quarry. The importance of every safe- guard against accidents has been brought to the attention of hunts men once more by Otto Schier- hecks, Chief Forester, who points to the fact that last year, from the opening of the big game sea- son on October 16 until the be- ginning of the rabbit season, November 24, not Jess than eighteen accidents occurred, four of them resulting in death. One third of the accidents resulted in «hooting of hunters mistaken by others for moose, The next greatest cause of injury was the | picking up of guns by the muzzle. Several other persons were hurt | by the use of old firearms or guns | in poor repair, "l have seen guns on which the lock was so worn that they | would go off if you looked at teem," the chief forester re- marked, "The coming season," he con- tinued, "is going to be consider- ab'y more dangerous than any other hunting season we have ever had. In the first place, be- cause the number of hunters is rapidly increasing. Secondly, be. cause it is now permissible to shoot both doe and buck deer on the mainland of the province." Mr. Schierbecks has issued a programme of safety precautions vhich {includes the keeping of guns in good condition, vigilance in not carrying loaded firearms in car, wagon or canoe, refusal to use old cartridges, care in walking, and in not carrying a cocked gun. The good old rules in regard to never pointing a gun at snother person or picking a firearm up by the muzzle, loaded or not, art also included, as well as the exhortation to secure a good view of a moose's head be- fore firing, and to place the bul- let in the moose or deer where it will kill and not maim, FARMER PLOWS FOR BURIED TREASURE Wembley, Alta.--Plowing oper. ations usually are preliminary to the sowing. and reaping of a gol- den harvest. There is, however, a slight variation to this rule in the case of Alex, Monkman, former of this district and founder of the famed Monkman Pass. Mr. Monkman returned from the Klondike gold rush, in the 90's, with a quantity of guicksil- ver. Not having any immediate use for it at the time he buried it on his farm, Time quicky destroy- ed all landmarks leading to the cache, Not to give up Mr. Monkman has commenced plowing in the hope of uncovering the buried treasure which now {is needed to carry out mining operations on his claims in the Monkman Pass and Fraser River areas.
