LEW CODY HAD T0 MEMORIZE RAGING SLANG Learning jargon of the ' race- track and the intricate art of "deal ing from the bottom," "stacking the deck" and so forth is almost like going to school over again. At least, so says Lew Cody, Lew "came honre" to the Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer studios, where most of his big successes were made, to play his first role there since his recent illness in "Sport- ing Blood," based on the Satur- day Evéning Post story "Horse- flesh," by Frederick Hazlitt Bren- nan. The role was that of Tip Scan- lon, the gambling magnate, The script called for plenty of racing slang--~not the slang one hears on the grandstand, but the slang of the inner circle of jockeys, train- ers, horse owners and bookmakers. Also he had to know the trickery of cards. The new story is a vivid drama of the racing game, with Clark Gable and Madge Lvans as central figures, who find regeneration in bringing an abused racehorse back to health. Charles Brabin directed the 'picture with a notable cast that includes Ernest Torrence, Marie Prevost, Harry Holman, Hallam Cooley "and others, Thrills of the Kentucky Derby and other famous races are among the highlights of the dramatic love story. She came from her native Spain and within six months was playing the leading lady in an all-Engliéh talking picture. Never before in the history of pictures has any player been featured after such a short period in which to learn the language. In "Never The Twain Shall Mect," Miss Montenegro has only one sentence in a foreign tongue. Centuries ago, long before there were ships of the air, romantic sca-faring men, voyaging far from their homes, swecthearts and wives 2fiectionately referred to their ship "she." And so all types of A are always called by the pro- nouns "she" or "her." At Lakehurst, N, J., when the great "Los Angeles" was ready to be used in filming "Dirigible," the officers of the airship gave the coms mand to take "her" out of the han- gar and in a few minutes, "she" was soaring in the heavens under the command of Jack Holt. What a leading lady the "Los Angeles" is! No other leading Ja- dy can compare with her in size) * And what a huge role she plays in "Dirigible!" The leviathan of America's aeris al navy is 650 fect tail. If you put her up against New York's tower ing Woolworth Building, she would almost reach the top. If the fast- est track athlete in the world sprin- ted with lightening speed from one end of the "Los Angeles" to the other, it would require, almost a halt a minute! The mdst terrific home runs Babe Ruth has ever made would fall short of the length of the huge airship.
