(11ef) 'INQUEST' RICH IN GHARACTER Pleasing Play Opens New "Intimate" Theatre in London (By Thos. T. Champian, Canadian Press Staff Correspondent) London, July 18--Most of the new building in London, as in other places, runs nowadays to large scale enterprises. In theatres, however, there seems to be a growing de- mand for houses of the small, "in- timate" character. The latest in this style of playhouse is the Windmill, an elegant little construction in am- ber at the back of Piccadily Circus. It has, opened its career under the happiest auspices, for "Inquest," a three-act play by Michael Barrin- ger, has whole-heartedly captured the London critics. As the title suggests, the scene is laid in a Coroner's Court, held in a village 'schoolroom. The actors wrestle with a specimens of this class, however, it is admirably writ- ten, "If there were nothing more in "Inquest' than the elucidation of the death of Thomas Hamilton, it would be merely a pretty piece of puzzle-making, says the dramatic critic of The Daily Telegraph, "but there is more. There is observation. There is atmosphere--the homely, half-friéndly, half - official atmos- phere of a coroner's inquest held in a country schoolroom, And there is character. "For me, the chief interest of the play lies not so much in watching two famous Wendies of other days --Hilda Trevelyan and Mary Glynne --writhing in the grip of the law, as in enjoying the glorious clush of personalities that develops between Herbert Lomas as country coroner and Campbell Gullan as famous K.C, The coroner particularly is a char- acter-study if the very richest real- ism--a magnificent example of the kind of 'thing our stage does best," A West London hawker was selling red cabbages when an old | Ing lady asked him, "Can you tell me the way to Turnham Green?" "Wot d'yer to turn "em green for?" said the man. "Can't: 'yer see they're for picklin"?" Rates For Classified Ad First insertion-- 13 cents per word. Minimum charge for one in- sertion 30c. Further, Mr. Kalisch says: "The performance was made notable by the fact that Signor Stabile appear- ed, for the first time in his career, in the title part. He gave us a fine, finished, comedy study of the craf- ty but kindly schemer and sang ex- tremely well, especially the fare- well to Florence, and he made every point incisively and without exag- geration. "The rest of the cast was un- changed. Signor Autori was excel- lent as the old Simone. Heddle Nash's Typical singing stood out by itself and Philip Bertram's voice us the Notary was most effective. Mr. Barbirolli conducted and kept the whole going with great spirit, His tempi are perhaps on the slow side, but that has the advantage that the delicious scoring is the clearer, "The evening ended with 'Fedra. which improves on acquaintance. Mme. Ponsclle in the title part sang superbly and Mr, Cortis as Ippolito, and Mme. Strella Wilson as Carila, supported her finely. Signor Serafin conducted." AIR INSURANCE STRUCTURE ADVISED (By The Canadian Press) London, July 18, --Great Britain led the world, and is still supreme, in marine msurance, She remains fittingly first in the new business of aviation ingurance, and the an- nouncement that a new and bigger concern is to take over this rapidly expanding enterprise comes as tan- gible evidence of the growth and substance of present-day civic fly- In 1924 British underwriters, with the help of cerfain insurance com- panies, set up an organization to cope with the special and some- ed, and today with worth more and carrying more valu- able loads, the volume of insurance is growing very fast and a larger framework is considered essential.
