THE OSHAWA DAILY: TIMES, SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1931 Soto Six And Eight Have Added Power Speed Style And Beauty De Soto Motor Corporation esents to the public a mew a new Bight for 1931; de- and developed by Chrysler rs Engineering staff. gh these decidedly improv- Brs include many added features jstinction the Eight is offered same price range as its pre- sessor. The Six is available at a low: price. Thus the value of De Soto Six, which holds the "record for first-year sales of a new |8tor car, and the De Soto Straight t, which played tag around the mountains near Ligonier, Pennsyl- _vania, under a heavy disguise a lit- over a year ago when it out-per- med other eight-cylinder cars of larger type, has been enhanced mat- erially. Sensing the ever increasing de- d for more power and greater lormance, the engineers have in- d the power, acceleration pility and speed of the Straight ight which, since its introduction 5 A year ago, has been recognized as = E ~~ "an outstanding performer. the new Bore and stroke of 4 straight eight engine are 27% inches by 4% inches, an increase of % in the stroke, giving a piston displace- ment of 220.7 cubic inches. With a slightly higher compression ratio of 5.4 to 1 the motor develops a brake horsepower at 3400 R.P.M. Hyen though the compygssion ratio i8 higher, the cylinder-head has ben designed so that the use of low- detonation fuels is unnecessary. The crankshaft, which is statical- ly and dynamically balanced and equipped with an impulse neutral- iger, has been increased in weight and is suported at five main bear- 'ing of ample size. Connecting rods are forged from a special high- manganese steel while the pistons "are of the aluminum alloy, steel- strut type pioneered by Chrysler engineers. The down-draft carburetion sys- tem used on the De Soto Straight Bight is a distinctive development of Chrysler Motors engineers, Gas- oline is supplied to the plain-tube carburetor by a cam-driven fuel . pimp. Not only does a more efficient use of fuel result with its attendant increase in power but a smoother torque and a more even flow of wer are forthcoming. The car- etor is provided with idle speed . adjustment, while fixed jets cover- ing all necessary ranges above idle speed compensate for variations of tude AQ Deak summer and win- ter venditions. Other carburetor equipment includes automatic ac- celeration pump, air-cleaner, fuel- filter and manifold heat control. | Motor lubrication is by full force- 'eed to all crankshaft, camshaft and onnecting rod bearings with a y under pressure from small bearings to lubricate the cylinder walls. The engine is supported at four points, road shocks and vibra- tion being taken up by rubber en- gine mountings located at both front and rear points of cntact with the chassis frame. Cooling of the motor is thermo- statically controlled. There is a heat indicator on the instrument panel. The clutch is a 10 inch single plate type in unit with the engine and transmission which is of the three-speed sliding gear design. Here is 1981 sible for the great power, lera- tion and performance of the De Soto Eight engine. The brakes are the De Soto in- ternal-expanding, waterproof, hy- draulic four-wheel type, operating on 11 inch drums and providing per- fect control of the car at all speeds and under all road conditions, an- other guarantee of safety. Steering is through a worm and sector with a three-spoke stering wheel per- miting perfect vision of the instru- ment panel at all times. Long senii- elliptic springs are attached to the frame by rubber-cushioned shack- les. Hydraulic shock absorbers which conpensate the springs, give perfect road-ability. Wheels are carried on double taper roller bear- ings. The rear axle is semi-floating and the final power drive is through a spiral bevel ring gear and pinion, having a gear ratio of 4.6 to 1 which is a change from the former ratio of 4.9 to 1. An Added Safety Factor There is a marked improvement in the appearance of the De Soto Eight, Added grace and beauty are the result of the artistic and stylish slender-profile radiator, the Jong hood, the sweeping air-wing fenWers and the De Soto crest carried as an identification plate on the head- lamp cross-rod rather than on the radiator or radiator shell. The Uui-steel body has been con- tinued with improvements. Only because of the advances made in electric flash welding and steel stamping, has this all-steel body its safety features, its low centre of gravity, its unusual roominess and its quietness, heen possible. Its sturdiness and shock-resisting qualities are an insurance to pas- sengers in case of accident. Interiors of De Soto Eight bodies have beén re-designed materially, with new uphilstery fabrics and har- monizing interior hardware which carries a new artistic touch. The in- strument panel in new form con- tains a grouping of instruments in- tended to complement the general interior motif. The modérn rust-proofing meth- ods are used throughout the car. Fenders and all enameled parts are bonderized. Other parts that are subject to the effects of rust are parkerized and sheradized. All De Soto Straight Eight mod- els include the following standard equipment--oil pressure guage, electric gasoline guage, light switch at the centre of steering wheel, 12.4 etered holes in the connecting rod® gallon rust-proof gasoline tank, adjustable front seat and hydraulic shock absorbers. 2 This new Straight Eight is being built in the following body styles: Sedan, De Luxe Sedan, Standard Coupe, Rumble Seat Coupe, Con- vertible Coupe and Roadster. Appearance Outstanding Conforming to the same basic principles which made the original De Soto Six the fastest selling first year motor car ever built, the en- gineers, nnder the leadership of the Chrysler Motor staff, have produced an entirely new DeSoto Six of re- markable beauty and brilliant per- formance and in a lower price class. Many factors contribute to this new style and vavacity. The De Soto crest, in color, mounted on the headlamp cross-rod, the impressive single bar bumpers and the slender profile radiator share with the graceful contours of body moulding treatment in cresting an air of fleetness. There is a pronounced lownes and consequent finer roadability made possible by cooperative achie- ment of chassis and body engineers | in designing the new double-centre drop frame with which all new De Soto Sixes are provided. This re- duction in overall height, without sacrifice of headroom, vision, or road clearance, has added greatly to the factor of safety by materially lowering the centre, of gravity. Coupled with this lowness is a long- er hood which adds a fleet, close-to- the-road appearance that is in di- rect keeping with the increased power and grater performance abil- ity of the new models. The well known safety features of welded all-steel construction are retained in the Steelweld body. Parking lamps are mounted on the cowl. A swing type windshield and new windshield header bar assemb- ly without visor are provided. Color combinations and upholstery have been selected most carefully to har- monize perfectly, A new motif of interior fittings: is introduced. Smoking sets are regular equipment. The instrument board contains an oval panel with chromium-plated frame and Indirect Jighting on which all instruments are compact- ly grouped. Standard equipment includes hy- draulic shock absorbers, oil pres- sure gauge, gasoline gauge, engine heat indicator, ammeter, speedo- metre, light switch in centre of steering wheel and switch lock. The new De Soto Six is being built in the following body styles-- INHERITS THE GREATNESS OF CHRYSLER LEADERSHIP . McLaughlin-Buick's long established reputation for depend ability is probably the foremost reason for the popularity of the kinnon said. But over and above the import- ant element of dependability, the 1931 McLaughlin-Buick Straight Eight is attracting the attention of the feminine motoring world hy the beauty of its appearance, fits modern coloring, rich appoint- ments, luxurious comfort, and per- haps above all other features, hy the ease with which it is handled and driven. Although this new Straight Eight is a big powerful car, it is easily controlled and handled. The new McLaughlin-Buick syncro-mesh transmission enables the driver Lo handle the car with the same ease and sureness that is usually as- sociated with the professional rac- ing drivers. The syncro-mesh transmission makes gear clashing impossible. The gears in second and high are constantly in step. The result is that even the veriest amateur driver can shift from second to high at speeds of 35 to 40 miles an hour without the slightest clash- ing of the gears. This type of transmission also provides unusu- ally fast acceleration and enables the driver to forge through traffic with an ease and swiftness form- erly displayed 'only by much high- er automobiles, ENTIRELY NEW CHRYSLER SIX IS INTRODUCED New Models Are Styled Like Smart Chrysler Eights The most important announcement of the Chrysler Corporation of Can- ada, Limited, is the line of entirely new Chrysler Sixes. They form excell- ent examples of Fisher body crafts- manship and set a new style trend in design. The distinctive and beautiful lines of the new Oldsmobile are at once apparent to visitors at the automobile show. Curves and streamline effects have been used artistically to give an appearance of length, lowness, speed and power. The radiator introduces a new note in front and design. It is deeper than the conventional types and broad at the top with graceful curves tapering slightly toward the base. Vertical radiator shutters extend to the narrow, curved splash apron. One piece, full crown fenders have been designed to fully harmonize with the curves of the radiator. The effect is further enhanced to twin tie rods which curve gracefully from fen- der to fender. Chromium-plated head lamps with pendants are supported by the tic rods, which are connect- ed in the centre by the Oldsmobile nameplate. A narrow molding follows. the side curve lines of hood and cowl, broad- ening out in a slightly convex panel extending around the sides of the body. The rear end is equally dis- tinctive. The rear window has been broadened, which adds to the fine appearance and to visibility. A new design cover over the gasoline tank with low filler cap materially' im- proves the looks of the car from the rear. v Style and comfort are combined in the interiors of the new Oldsmobile bodies. Seats are low and wide, at- fording ample headroom, and a new type of spring construction insures exceptional comfort. Mohair uphol- stery is being used in most: closed body styles, but whipcord is standard in the sport coupe and sport sedan. The instrument panel is particularty attractive and includes a new clock- type speedometer and an electric gasoline gauge Other fittings are in harmony, A new and improved type of con struction has been employed by Fish- er in these 1931" Oldsmobiles hich materially 'increases their strength and quietness.
