They like to do business in a friendly and cours teous manner. This does not imply that they are "soft;" far from it, but examples are given of South Ameri- can importers losing interest in North American firms because they were receiving three-line businesslike let ters instead of the personal friendly ones they were expecting. nguage Important The language question is also very important for after all that has been said to the contrary English is very little spoken in South America, The cultured class speak fluent French as a rule, but the rank and file expect to discuss business in Spanish or Por. tuguese, a fact worth remembering when appointing agents, The repre- sentative of one Ontario firm who has concluded some remarkable deal in Argentina and Chile, attributes his success to the fact that, before leay ing Canada, he had thoroughly famil- iarized himself with the import regu- lations of these two countries, and by taking a one year's subscription to a Buenos Aires newspaper, had learned enough Spanish to carry on his busi- ness, It is only by speaking the language of the South American people he is doing business with and sincerely try« ing to understand them that the Canadian exporter or agent will be called "muy simpatico," an expression which does not only imply sympathy, but also confidence Facts Stated These and other important facts have been carefully noted by the Canadian delegates, It now remains for Canada to make good use of the knowledge they will be in position to spread. Undoubtedly Canada's parti cipation in the British Empire Trade Exposition, and the visit of the Cana- dian Goodwill Mission have had a tremendous effect, but the good im- pression created, the valuable con acts established will be of little avail if the efforts just made are not fol. lowed up systematically and intelli gently? Hess, local photographer, who has gone ono better by providing a super canary to Invite the gaze of his subjects, It was a skeptical reporter, following up a hint, who discover ed the unique songster, After a few bars of the song had been whistled as a coaxer the canary ruffled up the feathers on its throat and things began to hap pen, What the reporter heard was "Johnnie Get Your Gun", sure enough, but not in the usual scale of the roller canary, It seemed for all the world as if someono had released a spring in an old-fashioned music box, ex- cept that the tune emitted was soft and lacked the objectionable metallle sound, It was at least two keys lower than Mr. Canary's regular song, but it was sweeter by far. The bird Is a cross between the ordinary roller canary and the Knglish song sparrow, The color of his plumage is dark green, 18, ee HOMELESS REPAY BENEFAC. Bur ess YELLO\/ WING HAS A RIVAL Rivalry is but a test, Bringing out the worst or best. «Qld Mother Nature. In the heart of Yellow Wing the Flicker angry jealousy was for the time 'being crowding out love, For days he har been telling Mrs, Yellow Wings how much he loved her and had been showing off, that she might sce him at his very best. She had given him little enough encourage- ment, but that was because she was teasing him. It was because she lov- ed to see. him show off. She was teasing him in order that he would keep on showing off and make love to her, All the time Yellow Wing had felt sure that in her own good time she would accept his attentions and return them, and that later they would make a home together, Now Yellow Wing wasn't so sure. e¢ had a rival, Another Flicker, a handsome fellow, had appeared and was trying to win the love of Mrs, Yellow Wing. Yes, sir, that is just what had happened. So Yellow Wing was angry because he was jealous, However, they didn't fight, Instead, each did his best to win the admira- tion and love of Mrs. Yellow Wing, Wherever she went both hastened to follow. Then each, one on one side of her and one on the other side, would try to show off better than the other, to outnod, outhow, outdance and outdisplay the other, Such soft endearing notes! Such gallant bowing and bending! Such odd dancing and prancing! Such a showing of gold-tinted wing linings! Perhaps it all turned Mrs," Yellow Wing's head & little. It had been very fine to receive such attention from one, but now it was from two, It was all very flattering, It was indeed. You sce, it made her feel very important. Her eyes sparkled and while she tried 10 appear bored and wholly indifferent, she was quite thrilled, Furthermore, she was be- ginning to doubt, She had all along thought that there was no one like Yellow Wing, but there was no deny- ing that this stranger was hand- some, She wasn't certain that he wasn't handsomer than Yellow Wing, And such good manners! He was so polite and so wosderfully attentive His voice was so coaxing as he said tender things to her. She couldn't help showing him that she admired him, and when she did this he re- doubled his efforts, Yes, Mrs, Yel flow Wing was enjoying this double fanrting. There was no doubt about t, Poor Yellow Wing. Until now it hadn't entered his head that Mrs. Yellow Wine might be won away from him, No, sir, it hadn't entered his head. Now lie was becoming feasiul, "I hate that fellow!" he would say to Limself, "He has no right to be here, Mrs. Yellow Wing ought to let him know that she will have noth- ing to do with him. Instead of that she is encouraging him, She looks at hit oftener than she does at me, He is a robber, That is what he is, a robber, - He is trying to steal her from me. He has no right to." Now, down in his heart Yellow Wing knew that this wasn't true, The stranger wasn't a robber. He had a perfect right to be there. He had a perfect right to try to win Mrs, Yellow Wing, He was doing nothing wrong: whatsoever. He wanted a mate and a home and he had fallen very much in Jove with Mrs. Yellow Wing, He wouldn't have been true to himself if he had- n't tried to win her, Of course, all the other feathered folk in the Old Orchard knew what woe going on. Thev couldn't help but 'know it. It amused them, They used to sit about and watch. They found those antics of Yellow. Wing and the stranger most amusing, Most of them hoped that Yellow Wing would win, He was an old friend and neighbor, while the other was a stranger, The three Flickers paid no atten- tion to these other Old Orchard folk. They were so intent on their Jove affair that they didn't even keep au reasonable watch for enemies. So it was that Black Pussy the Cat, from Farmer Brown's house almost caught the stranger, It was Welcome Robin who gave the alarm just in time, The three Flickers «are on the ground at the time, Yellow Wing and the stranger so occupied in showing off, and Mrs. Yellow Wing so intent watching them while trying to ap- pear not to, that Black Pussy stole almost to within jumping distance. She did jump when the three took to their wings at Welcome Robin's alarm, and the stranger lost two of the middle feathers from his tail, It was a close call: a very close call, (Copyright, 1931, 'I'.
