In hig 73rd year, the former Kaiser may be forced to restrict his favorite activity---wood chop- ping. which he says has greatly aided him in maintaining his good health, Recently, he hag been unusual. ly active in swinging his axe in the forest surrounding Doorn House, clearing out the parks to extend his special rose garden. The Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Finance, however, declared the Doorn Houte to be a national preserve, and the former Kalser will no longer be permitted to cut down trees without the per- mission of the director of state forests, The health of the once Imperial ruler was good after a dozen years In exile. His schedule provided for rising edrly as usual, a church service, a family dinner and the reception of the delegations which Invariably visit him on festive oc- casions, But the touch of flamor which has surrounded - previous birthday celebrations, especially the long-held hope that Wilhelm 11. might eventually return to his German throne, has vanished. FAMOUS VESSEL ENDS ITS CAREER Five-masted Schooner Con- verted Into Coal Barge Portland, Me.--Once the pride of the North Atlantic sailing fleet and one of the fastest vessels on the coast, the five-masted schoon- er Bright, built in 1918 at Seattle, Wash., will end her days as a coal barger. With the exception of one trip on the Pacific Coast, the Bright worked between North Atlantic ports, like many of the old sail- ing ships, she had a hectic career, When owned by Walter E. Reid, Portland millionaire, in 1027, the schooner had her bow smashed in a collision with a steamer, and was towed to this port. Two years later she was towed to Falmouth Iforeside, and plans were under way to convert her into a floating dance hall when she broke loose from her moorings and crashed into The Brothers, two {slands in the harbor, She was refloated and again towed to an anchorage in the harbor, A few weeks later the vessel was dismantled, her rigging gold and her long masts shipped away to be used as hoisters in a granite quarry. The Bright measured 258 feet in length and registered 2,100 tons gross. She had been anchored in the lower harbor for months when it was decided to moor her by a local coal firm for use as a storehouse for coal.
