Series" Gets Under Way Tomor- row Night at Local Arena at 7.30 p.m. -- Bowman- ville Opposes Whitby in First Game and Orono Meets Port Perry in Sec- ond Tilt--Series Is Caus- ing Much Interest And a Good Attendance Is Ex- pected--Admission Twen- ty-Five Cents Amateur hockey, other than an ex hibition game, will be officially open- ed to Oshawa fans tomorrow night at the Oshawa Arena, when four Juuior teams, none of them the Oshawa Juniors, will clash in a doubleheader, in the first round of the Sheriff Pax- ton Trophy Series, the first game SHERIFF J. ¥. PAXTON Donor of the handsome trophy starting at 7.30 p.m. The Sheriff Paxton Trophy is a trophy presented by Sheriff Paxton, | 'Preasurer of the O.H.A. and now a| resident of Oshawa, tor competition | among all Junior hockey teams in the | counties of Ontario and Durham, This | is the second year the trophy has | been competed for, Orono winning | the trophy last winter, the first year of competition. Sheriff Paxton has long been coa- nected with hockey and has been a member of the O.H.A. for a great many yess. The trophy is a tan- gible representation of the keen in-| terest he takes in 'hockey, especially | in these two counties. Last year there were only two en- tries, the other' teams having either disbanded or still in competition and in the series, Orono defeated Port Perry for the Cup. This year every city, town and village of any sixe, in the counties of Durham and On- tario, with the one exception of Port Hope, has a team entered in the scr- ies. Five teams, Orono, Port Perry Bowmanville, Whitby and Oshawa, | are striving to annex the trophy this | year and the ¢ompetition promises to be very keen. Two Games Tomorrow There will be two, games tomor- row night, the first starting at the hour of 7.30 p.m. sharp. owman- ville and Whitby clash in the first " game and this promises to be a real battle, with Bowmanville being slight favorites, Both teams are an un- known quantity, comparatively speak- ing, but they "have been keen rivals for years and a real hockey battle is anticipated. In the second game, last vear's contestants, Port Perry and Orono clash again. Orme Gamsby claims that his "Oronites" haven't a chance but we have heard Orme be- fore and unless Port Perry wants to be where they were last year, namely, among the "alsp rans", they had bet- ter tend strictly to business or they will be eliminated. Port Perry has a strong team but Orono has been practising faithfully and they can be relied upon to give a good account of themselves, : Oshawa Juniors have a bye and they along with tomorrow night's winners will draw to decide which two teams will meet in the semi-fin- als, Admission Fee is Small Judging from the enthusiasm being shown and the calibre of hockey be- ing produced by these teams during the practice hours at the local Arena, it looks very much as if the series is going to be a great success. A large crowd is expected. The Oshawa City hockey club, the Arena management and the trustees in charge of the Sheriff Paxton trophy have agreed to New Martin THUR. - FRI "THE CUCKOOS" Musical Comedy (All Technicolor) With Wheeler and Woolsey COMEDY Sport A La Carte FOX NEWS Today. The senior students in| their debut for the season gave an indication of having another good team, with most of last year's staff and several good additions, Port Col- borne also hinted strength, and pros- pects are that both-will play a prom- inent part in the regular O.H. A. ma- jor series. | The test last night was a typical early season warm-up, with not a great deal of geod . hockey or team play, but both forces displayed indi- vidual power that should be moulded | into high-class combinations with a | few more practices and games. The small crowd 'was treated to an inter- esting game, for the sides were even, and it was only a matter of chance which finished in front, There was little offensive strength shown by either side in the first per- iod, while the Ports collected a pair to start the second, only to have Var- sity reduce the lead before the inter- mission. In the last period the Ports, lacking the condition of the locals, slackened their pace, and Varsity took advantage to add two more scores for victory Shannon Leads Ports With Jerry Shannon and Fan Hex- imer of the flashy Niagar Falls junior team working on the front line, aid- ed by George Wade of Preston, the Ports were strong until lack of con- dition took its toil. The trio have all the natural ability for a great at- tacking line, but they did not work together, Heximer and Shannon giv- ing only occasional glimpses of their regular form, while Wade was not in- cluded in their play. Boucher's Goal Wins jor Rangers New York, Dec. 10.--A goal by Frank Boucher in the last minute of play, gave the New York Rang- ers a 3 to 2 victory over the Otta- wa Senators in a thrilling N.H.L. game last night. Climaxing a great third period rally in which the Rangers came back to win af. ter being outplayed through the first two frames, Boucher got away from the pack near the Ranger goal with Bill Cooke's pass to help him get clean, evaded the Ottawa defence by some fine stick-hand- ling and beat goalie Connell with an off-balance. shot. . SPRINGFIELD INDIANS WINS FROM BOSTON TIGERS BY 5-3 Springfield, Mass., Dec, 10.--The Springfield Indians continued their sensational play in the Canadian- American Hockey League when they annexed their eighth. straight victory at the expense of the Bos- ton Tigers here last night, the score being 5 to 3, An overtime period was neces- sary to break the 2 to 2 tie that existed at the end of the regula- tion hour. A goal by Selbert on a shot that caromed off the chest of Winkler proved the deciding tally.
