PACE TWELVE a oa a THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1930 BALMY BEACH BEAT "BLUE DEVILS" IN BATTLE BENEATH BULBS Blue Devils Put Up Stiff - Opposition to "B.B.s"' But Fumbles Prove Very Costly Large Crowd Attends On- tario's First Rugby Game Played by Floodlights -- Blue Devils Hold Seniors at 6-3 for Three Quarters But Two Unlucky "Breaks" Give Winners Their Last Ten Points -- Spectacular Playing and Fumbles Are Features of a Close, Hard-Fought Game (By Geo, Campbell) Two touchdowns, scored when an Oshawa half back fumbled a catch and & Balmy Beach player recover- ed and crossed the line for a touch- down, enabled the Palmy Beach Seniors to roll up the impressive score of 21 to 4 in their floodlight game last night at Ulster Stadium, Toronto, against the General 'Mo- tors' Blue Devils, The game was much better and far closer than the score indicates and the Blue Devils earned the ad miration and applause of most of the fans by the plucky and eapable scrap they put up. Balmy Beach started with a team made up, in a large part, of second string players but before the game Was over, they had thrown into the fray, at one time or another, practically every available member of thelr regular squad, including Stewart, Foster, Keith, Reeve and others Hubbell and Rowden both turned in wonderful games in the Oshawa backfield but fate gave them each a rude knock, Each muffed a catch which was recovered by an oppon- ent, who scored a touchdown, Lor- tie, Kohen, Bond, Logan and Wil- son all turned in great games hut they were pitted against a hunch of gridiron veterans and in the end experience told. Oshawa started out fast and at one time the score stood at two to nil for the Blue Devils. The score at the end of the first quarter was 6 to 2 for the winners and it was the same at half time, It was 6-3 at the end of the third quarter. This is just about a true indication of the margin of play in the first three quarters, The Blue Devils played good rughy and executed some smart plays, There was all kinds of action, in the first quarter especially and the entire game was lively, While not wishing to detract from the honour due Balmy Beach for winning the game, in all fair. ness to the Blue Devils, it must be admitted that the Deachers were far from being seventeen points bet- ter than the Blue Devils last night, They got touchdowns which were distinetly of the 'fluke' variety, On the other hand Balmy Beach re. ecoived nearly all the penalties for offsides. These last two touch. downs were scored when Rowden and Hubbell each fumbled the catch of a kek, In each case a Balmy Beach player sepoped up the loose ball and streaked for the Oshawa line and a touch, Good Game Until Last Quarter There was- no scoring in the 2nd quarter and the score at halt time 6 to 2, gives an jdea of just how closely the game was played. At the end of the third guarter, the score was only 6 to 3,%Le, the Blue Devils outscored them this peripd. The Beachers had the ball right on the Oshawa line when the final session started, They carried it over for a touchdown and then later, came the two "fluke" touches, The Blue Devils, in the last quarter, where not as the Blue Devils who played in Galt, and they were outlucked in the final stanza. After Balmy Beech got their second touchdown, the Blue Devils had them on the de- foensive for practically" all of the last quarter, with the exception of only one or two times, Clever Plays Feature Game The game was exciting and thrill ing, due to a great many spectacn lar and unusual plays, together with a great deal of fumbling, Osh- awa's first play won them a large number of supporters, when Trib- ble and Rowden combined for fifty vards, Logan's crash through the line, Teddy Reeve's excursion through the centre and resulting "Percy Williams' Act," by Mur ray Johnston, the' smart kicking of Ab, Box, Harris and, especially, Hubbell, and Lortie's fine run, were only a few of the highlights of the game, not to mention the fumbles, which were all too frequent Playing rugby by floodlight prov ed quite a drawing card and there was a good erowd in attendance The players liked the game and the spectators were satisfied, as the game was quite easy to wateh, The Blue Devils put up a game fight, against a superior aggregation, an they provided opposition which was quite strong enough to test the great Balmy Beach team Doug May, former Oshawa boy, was one of the best men on the Toronto team, His catching was. faultless and he proved one of the hardest men the Oshawa tacklers have yet heen called upon to stop Stewart, Kirkland, Hendry, Reeve, Keith, Sny der, Bex and Harris nll turned In rood games, The Oshawa line was subjected to some heavy plunging but they stood up well under the tank Johnny Hare, another Osh- awa boy, was In the game, In a 0.8, uniform Lortie was one of the hest for Oshawa, He tackled well and ecar- ried the ball nicely, Cutler turned in a nice game, as did Logan, Gray and Wilson, Cornish did well while he was In there Kohen, Bond, Boulthes and Walker tackled smartly, The backfield turned in a good game and they did rome fine running, but the hreaks went against them, THE GAME Balmy Beach kicked to Hubbell who returned to Harris An tension gave them a galn and then Kirkland craghed for a good gain Harris kicked to Hubbell who ran ten yards, On the first Oshawa play they drew the crowd to thelr feet with a wonderful play which netted fifty yards.
