(97¢) CANADIAN ORATOR 15 PLAGED SECOND International Contest By KEN CLARK. Canadian Press Staff Writer Washington, Oct. 27. "Long live Canada, long live Peace!' ex- claimed M, Paul Leduc, Canada's contestant in the fifth International Oratorical Contest. The tall red- haired student of St. Therese Semi- nary, Quebec, howed to the audi- ence and judges, walked off the platform after the delivery of his ) | prepared address on Saturday night amid a thunder of applause from four thousand people who jammed Constitution Hall and with the tro- phy apparently tucked under his arm. But when it came to extem- poraneous speaking Edmund Gul- lion, the American contestant, was clearly much the best man, and the judges gave him the palm, placing Leduc second and Clemente Perez Zantartu of Chile third. Last year, M. Roche Pinard of Montreal, won the contest for the Dominion. M. Leduc, it was generally agreed, had the finest platform presence of any of the eight speak- ers. His firm, clear baritone voice was well heard in the furthermost cor- ner of the immense quadrangular room. Without Canadian prejudice it may be said that the subject given him for his extemporaneous speech, "The Significance of the Treaty of Montreal" was perhaps not as susceptible of rapid treat- ment as those given to some of the other young orators, It took the recent American lega- tion parade in Boston nine hours to pass a given point. And then the cops had to go and raid the given point! --Border Cities Star. United States' Boy First in| HOW T0 RILIEVE CATARRHAL DEAFNESS OR HEAD NOISES If you have catarrh, catarrhal deafness or head noises caused by catarrh, or if phlegm drops in your throat and has caused catarrh of the stomach or bowels, you will be glad to know that these distressing symp- toms may be entirely overcome in instances by the following treatment which you can casily prepare in your own home at little cost. Secure from your druggist a 1 oz. bottle of Par- mint (Double Strenth). Take this home and add to it % pint of hot water and a little sugar; stir until dissolved, Take one tablespoonfui four times a day. An improvement is sometimes noted after the first day's treatment. Breathing should become easy, while the distressing head noises, headaches, dullness, cloudy thinking, etc, should gradual- ly disappear under the tonic action of the treatment. Loss of smell, taste, defective hearing and snucous drop- ping in the back of the throat are other symptoms which suggest the presence of catarrh and which may often be overcome by this efficacious treatment. If nearly ninety per cent, of all car troubles are caused bv ca- whose hearing may be restored by this simple home treatment OF WESTERN WHEAT - Ottawa, Oct, 7.--The losses suf- fered by the western farmers in re- cent snow storms were impressed upon the Government when Hon. George Hoadley, Alberta Minister of Agriculture, telegraphed Hon. Robert Weir, Federal Minister for the corresponding department, aske in that the farmers be given free drying of wheat at terminal eleva- tore. Consideration will be given to the request, | Infant Mortality Low in New Zealand Washington, Oct. 27.--New Zea- land is the safest place in the world to be born, according to Labor De- partment statistics. The Children's Bureau of the de- partment reported that New Zea- land has broken {ts own record for the lowest infant mortality rate in the world by a new low of 34 deaths for every 1,000 live births in 1929, just half the infant death rate in the United States.
