GENOA DECLARES ITWAS COLUMBUS TRUE BIRTHPLACE Italian City Indignant Over Statements of Professor Fo Genoa, Italy.--An avalanche of indignation has swept over this citadel of Columbus, stirred by the recent statement of the Peruvian Professor Luis Ulloa that the navi- gator was a Catalonlan corsair, was not born in' Genoa, and ace companied Danish corsairs to Amer- ica years before 1492, via Iceland, Greenland and Labrador. Genoa is pointing the heavy guns of her battery of documents, historical records and references at Profesor Ulloa, and demanding that he come to Genoa himself to search out the truth. This documentary arsenal will be thrown open to pub- lic inspection shortly, Marquis Guiseppe Pesagno, Ita- 1y's foremost Columbian expert and director of the archives of Genoa, has charge of Genoa's defending forces. He outlined his defense to the Associated Press correspon- dent. "I have invited. Proessor Ulloa here," he said, "to. examine the hundred attested documents in the state. archives regarding the Ge- noese citizewShip of Columbus. Pro- fessor. Ulloa claims these docu- ments are. false, but he has never examined them, has never accept- ed our invitation to conte here and do so, ~ / ' Documents Preserved "Leaving aside all legend and |' tradition there exist the following 14th century documents of nota- ries, known and: unknown, and the registered documents of the Bank of St. George, #1--Documents, which establish the birth and family of Columbus at Genoa; genealogical tree of the Lig- urian family of Columbus, and the asserto document. . "2--Presence and life of Colum- bus at Genoa .agd in Liguria. Do- cuments are registered in the ar- chives of Genoa and of' Milan. Trip to Spain: and preliminaries of the Atlantic 'expedition, covering the years' from 1451 to 1491, Docu- ment of de la Ronciere. "These 'documents have been compared - with the biographical notes of the Admiral, and reported by his: son and other historians. These documents cover. the years 1429, 1440, 1444, 14453447, 1448, 1450, 1455, 1470, 1471, 1473, 1477, to 4194, They state the condition of the Admiral's family, of contracts, salgs, of the house of his father, Domenico Columbus, and follow the family from Genoa to Savona. They record the ages of his brothers, the marriage of his sister, the Admiral's early life. "The documeht of assereto was drawn up by the notary Gerolamo da Ventimiglia, and describes how Columbus returned to Genoa on a business trip in August of 1479. Statement By Columbus "In the act of a notary of 1470 Columbus statés himself to be 19 years old, which date coincides with the date of his birth in 1451. "Two documents, March 20 and August 7, of the year 1472 record that Domenico and his son Cristo- foro were at Savona that year. His father, a weaver. of wool, also kept an inn for some time. Genealogical papers of Columbus' grandfather are dated 1429 to 1473. In the city hall of Genoa, are the two let- ters written in 1502 by Columbus himself to the Bank of St. George. The reply from the bank calls Col- umbus 'citizen.' "The house where Columbus was born is now destroyed. The house of Columbus, by the St. Andrea gate, was his childhood home,. his father living there from 1455 to 1470, "When Columbus was 23 years old he went to Savona, sailing not as a navigator but as a commercial traveler for the House of Spinola. He visited Iceland and was at Bris- tol, England, in 1477. Professor Ulloa has confused the voyage made by Columbus in 1477 to Ice- land and Bristol. i "The Greeks Cazenov and Bisi- pat, said to be related to Colum- bus as they bore the name of Cou- lomb, were not relatives of his, as Columbus in those days was a very 'common name, 9 "Above all, when Columbus wrote his letter to the Bank of San Glorglo, he wrote 'Siendo yo naci- } do en Genova' (I was born in Genoa).""
