It is perhaps slightly incorrect to say that it is 'going to be a suc- cess for it has already proved one of the most successful shows of any kind staged in Oshawa for years: Being just a common or garden re- porter and one who is fond of ram- bling around the town getting his eyeful of anything that is doing the writer happened in the Sohw Room at 10 King Street West during Sat- urday evening on the first day of the venture, In the first place it was hard to get in for the crowd exam- show was so squeezing and pushing that one was able to get within view of the var- However, af- ter waiting for a considerable time until the.crowd had dispersed we then we able to get a good view of what was doing and also a chance to speak to one of the dealers. Approaching George Alchin, one of Oshawa's best known radio dealers, we asked "How's things Mr, Alchin. (Being a stranger to him, we natur- ally called him Mr. instead of George as everyone knows him) "Well" answered Mr. Alchin, "when we ar- ranged this thing 1 hardly thought that the public would take such a keen interest, but they sure have been coming in great flocks since we opened this afternoon. Do you know," he added, "we have had near- ly four thousand people in here this afternoon." Being satisfied that at least one of the dealers was pleased with the show we approached others and all wete of the same opinion, The show was going to be a great success. As it was gurting late on Saturday even- ing when the writer managed to get into the show he left the viewing of the models for another time, Likewise, on Tuesday, we decided that the time was ripe to pay an- other visit to the show, and see what it is all about. Not being the owner of a radio we thought that we wouid get a line on what there was in dis- play while it was to be seen so hand- ily. A goodly number of people were present viewing the models despite the fact that the hour was one at which most of the men had gone back to work and most of the women were washing the dinner dishes. The first thing that struck us when we entered was the great change which had come over an empty store in a very few hours, Instead of just bare walls and ceiling it had been trans- formed into an autumn garden with crimson and gc'l leaves forming a canopy overhead and the walls drap- ed with the same decoration, Numer- ous beautiful laps gave a homey and: comfortable atmosphere to the show room while the quiet but taste- ful furniture added to the already pleasant scene. On our right we saw a number of DeForest CroMey late models being shown by the Moffat Motor Sales, one of the company's dealers in this city, They were taste~ fully arranged with banners describ- ing their salient features on the wall behind them. Yes, they certainly Jooked attractive, but we were not going to select any model for future purchase until we had seen and care- fully examined the remaining num- ber of exhibits. . Next we came to the display of Philco Balanced Radio which are sold in Oshawa by the Ontario Mo- tor Sales. Courteous clerks were in charge and appeared only too pleased to explain the difference between a screen grid and an ordinary tube, something we never could understand before. Every now and then we would ask "what is this meant for and what is that meant for" and each time the mysterious gadget was fully explained, why it was on the set, what part it played in giving the owner finer reception, and the dir- ference between a set equipped with this particular part and oneé not so equipped. This display like the formi- er left us undecided what to purchase so we passed on to the next exhibit. Perhaps it was a good job that the clerks did not know that they were talking to a newspaper man and that it would after be told in The Times or they would likely have said so much that we would have become be- wildered and would have forgotten half of what had actually been said, We then came back to George Al- chin's stand and were glad to find him out at the time or else he would have given the game away and let it Times. We stayed for a while viewing the Rogers and Majestic models which were there .in many styles and models. We were told why the latter is called the Mighty Monarch of the Air and that the manufactur- ers of this line are the largest manufacturers of complete electric radios in the world. We were also told that the Rogers was the first electric radio to be manufactured and that it is manufactured by the largest Radio Company in Canada. We heard of the rapid growth of the manufacturers of the Rogers Electric from a small company hardly known to one of the fore- most companies in the radio field in the world, We heard these ma- chines, listened to their mellow tones and after a close inspection of the beautiful cabinets in which the sets were enclosed we moved to the next stand even more be- wildered than before. Every Radio we had séen appeared to be just the thing for us but we dare not make our choice until we had seen: the remaining two displays. We then approached the Cleve Fox Hardware Display of Sparton Radios, another of the finer radio sets manufactured on the American continent, Here again weé were struck with the beauty of the vari- ous cabinets, the fine tone and sel- ectivity of the receivers and the courteous manner in which the at- tendant explained the various de- tails of the construction of the ma- chines to is. Here we were handed some literature so that when we were home we might better peruse it and thereby find it _ easier to choose a model. "How's the crowd today?", we asked just by way of a little conversation. "Well" an- swered the Sparton gentleman, "there has heen =a mighty lot through here but we expect the last three days of the week to break all records. Drop in and see the crowd on Farmers' Day." We decided that we might act on that suggestion partly to see if his prophecy comes true and partly to have a few points cleared up about the various models in the show, Then we passed to the last exhib- it, What we have sald concerning her, the enterprising salesman and dealer for Atwater Kent and Victor Radios had expected so great a business to acrue from the show that he had moved his desk to the scene of action. When we arrived at his exhibit he was busy filling out some form and we guessed thai another sale had been made, Of course we dare not question him in case he suspected that we were a news gathering hound. So leisurely we inspected his stock and learned a lot more about radios, We learned that during the present year, in fact just a few weeks ago, Atwater Kent had ship- ped from their factory, the largest fn the world incidentally, their three millionth radio, That was some record but then ae turned and told us some remarkable facts about the Victor which about evened mat- ters up with the Atwater Kent. We then passed from the radio show, a little reluctantly in view of the pleasant way in which we had been greeted by ail the clerks and salesmen, and of the pleasant and harmonious surroundings. We have not yet decided what make we are going to purchase. They are all good ana we strongly urge and advise the public to see this show for it is well worth while, Perhaps not again gill the opportunity be given herd one can view some of the best makes with so little effort and time wasted. Since our visit we have become slightly radio crazy. We have been trying to de- cide what is the best to buy and while we have not yet made up our minds we can tell the public with confidence that any radio purchas- ed at the Radio Show at 10 King Street west from an Oshawa dealer will be satisfactory and will give service ably backed up by the men who have been responsible for the First Oshawa Radio Show.
