(87a) EMPIRE SERVICE GOING FORWARD Air Mail Route From Lon- don to Cape Town Opens Shortly EMPIRE SERVICE London, Eng.--The opening of the first half of the air mail route from Cairo to Cape Town by Im- === |perial Airways in January next, as r recently announced, to be followed +! ountain, a few months later by the service being carried right through to Cape Town, thus establishing an air mail service between London and the Cape with an 11:day service in great step forward in the develop- ment of the air communications of the Empire. The Times says edi- torially: " "It will halve the distance in time between "London and Cape Town, and effect an even greater proportionate saving in the time now taken to reach other important centres in Africa; and the part of the service between Khartoum and Northern Rhodesia will bring into close and regular touch with the rest of the world a huge tract of country in Africa which has hither- to been without any but the most primitive means of communication, The scheduled time for(the whele Journey will, in the beginning, be 11 days, but it is hoped that it will be reduced to nine when the completion of the meteorological work, for which arrangements have lalready been made, enables night flying /to be introduced over the African sections. Primarily, the Special Reduction A few 1930 model Philco and Radiola Radios at 33 per cent. off, terms. Ontario Motor Sales Limited 99 Simcoe Street South i service is intended to be a mail service, but passengers will also be carried, and Imperial Airways, who have organized and will run the gervice, are providing accomoda~ tion for rest and refreshment at the landing places in Africa where no adequate facilities exist at pres- ent.. "This final approval of the de- tailed" plans for the service is the result of negotiations which were opened by the Air Ministry more than a year ago with the various Governments and authorities con- cerned. The time they have taken is not excessive, for much prelimine ary work had to be done and many separate interests had to be recon- ciled. The Union Government of South Africa, which has supported the scheme from the beginning, is making a substantial contribution to the necessary subsidy and is actively assisting the project in other ways. The Governments of the Sudan, of Kenya, Uganda, Tan- ganyika, and Northern and South- ern Rhodesia, are also co-operating, and the Egyptian Government, through not contributing to the sub- sidy, is providing valuable facili- ties for the service." CHURCHILL WORK SATISFIES MANION Optimistic Over Future of Hudson's Bay Ottawa, Oct. 13.--Back from 2 flying inspection trip of Hudson Bay Railway and Churchill, Hon. R. J. Manion, Minister of Railways and Canals, over the week-end ex- pressed keen satisfaction with the progress of the work, 'Unless something very unforeseen or un- expected happens," Dr. Manion declared, "we will he able to open Churchill for test shipments next September. The railways is in shape right to Churchill, and I was most impressed with Churchill harbor, as when properly dredged it ean hold an immense fleet, "There remains a good deal of work in regard to the arrang- ing of insurance rates, chartering vessels and matters of that nat- ure; but steps are being taken 'well In advance to see that noth- ing is overlooked. "While I have never visited Port Nelson I have had reports on it, and it is my opinion that Churchill was a very wise choice as the terminal, possesses a nat- ural harbor with some dredging required. As to the future of Churchill as a shipping port, of course time and experience of the route alone will tell: but many are most optimistic about Churchill becoming one of the most import ant ports." TWO SLASHED BY NEGRO IN LONDON Oct. 13.--Less than two weeks after he com- pleted a term in the provincial reformatory for stabbing, Harry Glenwood Avenue, negro, went on another rampage on Saturday night, and, it is ale leged, from his furious wielding of a knife or razor sent two per- sons with wounds to Victoria London, Ont., either direction, will constitute a 'Hospital. : Mrs. Rachael Clinton, 11 Front Street, & negress, and Gordon Coulter, of 37 Pegler Street white, were his victims, ! BRITISH WARSHIPS MAY GO TO BRAZIL RH London, Oct, 11.3 wo British cruisers fn the West Indies have been ordered to stand by in réadi- néss to sail for Brazil and protect British interests during the civil war there, if necessary, The admiralty stated that cruis- er Delhi, now coaling in Trinidad, and the cruiser Dauntless, at King- ston, Jamaica, were being held ready for emergencies.
