THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, MONDAY, MAY 19, 1930 Nanny's Terrible Journey By Thornton W. Burgess Take head and to this truth attend; e best and worst must have an end \ --OIld Mother Nature -- For quit¢ a while after Blarina's visit to the old tin can in which she was living, Nanny Meadow Mouse was uncasy, She would have been even more uneasy had she known who it was that visited her home while she was out. But Blarina didn't come back and after a while Nanny stopped worrying. It is that way with the little people of the Green Forest and the Green Mcadows. They may be térribly frightened or ter- ribly worried, but the fright and worry seldom last long, They are soon "forgotten, Nanny was out getting her break- fast one morning when she heard heavy footsteps. She looked up to sce one of those terrible two-legged creatures coming her way. Really, it was Farmer Brown's Boy and, of course, he isn't terrible at all. Nan ny didn't recognize him and she took to her heels in fright. She made straight for that old tin can and hopped inside. There she crouched down 'and waited for what would happen next. What happened Nanny will never forget as long as sh¢ lives. Nanny has had many frights, but never one fo compare with this, You see, Furm- er Brown's Boy saw the old tin can and just for fun, not knowing that Nanny was inside, he pretended that that old can was a football and tried to sce how far he could kick it. Of course, when his foot hit that can. it made .a tremendous noise inside. It was worse. than a clap of thun- der. And then before she could start to run that old can rose in the air and turned over two or three times. 'When - finewy it landed on - the ground with a thump Nanny was so frightened that she couldn't run. Phen. up came Farmer Brown's Boy. "This old can," said he, "should not be out here on the Green Mea- dows. I'l} take it along with me over 10 those bushes on the edge of the Green Meadows, where it will be out of sight. Tf there's anything I dislike to see, it's old cans lying arofind. Besides, this would be in the way in mowing time." ' So Farmer Brown" Boy picked the van up. You see, there was a little handle on the top, When he picked Meanwhile, Farmer Brown's Boy was tramping across the Green Mea- dows without ever once thinking that there mgiht be any one in that can, He was whistling as he walked. When he reached the bushes he gave the can a toss. It just happened that that can landed right side up. Yes, sir, it landed right side up. It is a mason's convention, something handed down from the past age to age, and in the process ie horrors of death are vanquish- ed." Dublin Opinion. Nothing could have been worse for Nanny. You sce, that hole in the top, the only hole there was, couldn't be reached by jumping and of course she couldn't climb the straight sides of that tin can. She was in a fix, was Nanny Meadow Mouse. Fortu- nately, she didn't realize it at first. She was so badly frightened that all she did was tq crouch down in that bed of. grass at the bottom of the can and try to make herself as small as possible, Then she listened to. the whistling of Farmer Brown's Boy fade away in the distance and won- dered what was going to happen next, (Copyright, 1930, 1.
