(41-43-4547) WORLDWIDE BREAK IN WHEAT PRICES SEEN INEVITABLE British Millers Say Back of Pools May Be Broken Before 1930 Harvest London, - Feb. 20.--(U.P.)--A worldwide break in wheat prices in the near future, due to over-supply, was predicted today by British mill- ing experts, They said there was still wheat Teft trom the 1928 crop, that gran- aries of the world were crammed with 1929 crop, and that the back of Canadian and American Wheat Pools might be broken even before farmers commenced reaping their 1930 harvests. The Pools have held back much of their grain from European mar. kets in the hope of getting higher prices, but have not taken into con- sideration, the milling men say, the fact that wheat production throughout the world is consider- ably in excess of requirements, Storage Heavy Argentine and European grow- ers outmanoeuvered the pools and captured the markets here, accord- ing to the milling experts, with the result that enourh wheat is in storage in Great Britain to last for four months, including the British crop, Four-pound loaves of bread re- cently were reduced to 815 pence from 9 pence in Britain, and fur- ther early declines are foreseen. Not only will there be a break in world prices, the milling men de- claré, but the Canadian Wheat Pool will be forced to conclude a hasty coal-and-wheat exchange agreement with Lord Privy Sea J. H, Thomas to prevent serious fin- ancial loss to Canadian farmers. Thomas has suggested an ar- rangement whereby Canada will trade its wheat for British coal, with British and Canadian ships thus carrying cargoes hoth ways. The London newspaper News of the World appeared today with banner-lines stating "World glut- ted with wheat." It pointed out that Russia had actively entered the wheat export fleld through a flve- year program of exporting grains and importing machinery, and quoted a leading Erain expert as saying the Soviets were willing to sell their wheat at almost any price. The article coupled the Russian exports with the announcement made in Paris Saturday that the French Senate had authorized im- mediate expropriation of 494,600 tons of bounty-fed wheat, and add- ed that neither development was calculated to support wheat prices. Farmers Hit British farmers, who grow enough wheat annually to supply Britain's needs for about six weeks, are badly hit, by the wheat over- supply. The Labor Government is unwilling to tax wheat imports in their protection, on the theory that nothing should be done to increase food prices in this country. A movement is underway in Ger- many to use more German rye than imported wheat in bread, thus re- stricting another market for Cana- dian and American grain, FIRE THREATENS BROUGHAN HOUSE Midnight Blaze Saturday Was Quickly Brought' Under Control Brougham, Feb. 17-----The local firemen had a hasty call to fire which broke out in a frame house on the R, Reesor farm, 4th con. cession, about midnight on Satur day night.
