Vancouver is rapidly becoming a city of beautiful buildings, said Mr. Andrew L. Mercer, president of the Architectural Institute of Brit- ish Columbia, in an exclusive in- terview to The Vancouver Sun. The development of sound arch- itectural taste in the city is a rec- ent growth, however, he declared, and many sections must be rid of hideous structures before Vancou- ver is truly beautiful, "The legs we say about our arch- itecture of the years before 1905 the better," Mr, Mercer remarked, "Until that time there was only one decent piece of design In the whole city. That was old Molson's Dank building, which has since become a part of the David Spencer, Limited, store." Designs Praised Five downtown buildings of good design were erected in the four "boom'* years from 1909 to 1913 Mr. Mercer declared. "The Police station on Cordova street is a real- ly good design in mass proportions, whatever defects it may have in planning," he said.
