(25b) | Tho whole. relationship: of lawyer Lawyers and Clients (Toronto Globe) Charges of dishonourable con- duct against Ontario lawyers for- tunately have been few, though of a serious nature, Considerable alarm has been created In the public mind, and there is being discussed agafu the question - of providing greater protection for clients against legal advisers with- out regard for the houdrable tra- ditions of thelr préfession. The unfortunate feature of cases at pre- sent uffder investigation is that widows and elderly people appear to be the vigtims. Huge sums are involved, and a largo pumber of people who trusted the men accus- ed. are likely to lose thc savings of a lifetime. As the Hamilton Spectator points out, "the recent stock exchange crisis proved theo downfall of many of these men who were caught short," and the temptation to. make use of funds entrusted to their care apparently proved too strong to be resisted. The Spectator goes on to say: The Law. Soclety cannot afford to ignore suéh happenings, The need for action has been shown on previous -occasions, but the cases now before the public emphasize the need. more strofigly 'than ever and client rests on confidence; if that ds impaired, "the result is bound to be as unfortunate to the legal profession as it is to the public at large. Stops should be taken without delay to remedy the defects' which have hgen disclosed. By a system of bonding its mem- bers the Law Society could go far toward reassuring the community No slight is implied in the sugges tion, which, it is reasdnable to as- sume, would be welcomed by the profession itself as a protection against' unworthy members. Bond: ing is the only effective method ot control over thos who have charge of other people's money; there 1s no apparent reason why members of the legal profession should be exempted from the requirement. On the contrary, in view of what has happened, and the widespread 'distress which has becn caused, there is thé strongest sround: for insisting on the adoption of the measure, Tnactién, under the cir- cumstances, is inexcusable ana heartless." The suggestion seems reason- able, The légal profession is justly proud of its high standing in this Country. But no matter how hon- orable any body of men may be, there always will be the odd black sheep whose actions besmirch the general character. The public will be justified 'in looking to the Law Society for action, and there is no doubt the soclety will respond in a manner tHat\\ will ensure protection t client and maintenance 6f the high repute in which the legal profegsion is held. Aubin E. Arsenault, of the Prince Edward Island Supreme Court, first President of the Dominion organization, and also President of the Prince Edward Island Tourist Association, at the latter's annual meeting held here the first week in January. Mr. Justice Arsenault referred par- ticularly to arrhngements for a lar ger ferry, which will greatly assist tourist travel to the Island by elim- inating the necessity for transferring automobiles to and from the main- land on flat cars. The provincial tourist association organized jn 1923 as an experimental venture, is now recognized through the Province as one of its leading revenue producing enterprises, ac- cording to the annual report of the secretary, M. K. MacFadyen. Tour- ist travel from Ontario has increased forty percent, due largely to the work of the Maritime Provinces of fice in Toronto under the direction Automobile trafic to the Island continued to increase. In. 1928 eight hundred cars. visited the Province during the tourist season. Last year the number was five thousand, an: increase of four hundred over 1928. Summer hotels and boarding houses were filled and many new farm homes 'opened to the tourists. With the opening of the new Canadian National hotel in Charlottetown this year, a marked improvement in tour ist traffic is expécted. 3 Last year the Canadian Women's Press Club and the Canadian Good Roads Association met here. & LAUGH AFTER LAUGH IN NEW SCREEN FARCE Radio's "The Very Idea' Jammed with Comedy Doris Eaton and Allen Kearns -- with a child they hope will be nothing short of a prodigy. NEW SCALLOP BEDS FOUND OFF COAST * OF NOVA SCOTIA Halifax, N.8., Jan. 30.~The prgm- ise of considerable enlargement . in the production of Nova Scotia seal- lops, which already amounts to more than ninety per cent of the dian output, is seen in the discovery in western Nova Scotian waters of areas where these shell-fish abound. The aress weré explored late last summer by the steamer Madeline A., chartered by the Fisheries Depart- ment. Scallops were found in Sherburne Bay, the western channel off Cape Negro Island, and in Port LeHeb- ert harbor, A few were also found in Lockeport Bay. Large scallops wete taken in scattered areas Jin Shelburne harbor, and driggings were fruitful from Cape Negro to Port Clyde in the Clyde River, psar- ticularly in shallow water near shore. Scallop landings in Canada in 1928 totalled 26,304 barrels with a mars keted value of $140,838; all save 1. 771 barrels were taken by Nova Sco- tian fishermen. Most of the scallops landed in Canada are marketed fish, but it is believed that the brine freezing pro- cess will be increasingly used in the future in marketing these shellfish, WHEN THE WIND HOWLS "That was an excellent speech you made on the tariff" d "I am glad you liked it," said Sen- ator Sorghum.
