AGE ElGH 1 HE OSHAWA DAILY ives, LUESDAY, JANUARY 4v, [PV] "Dual Nature of Electron Laid Bare by Camera Lens } Philadelphia, Jan. 28--An elec- 'ron--the tiniest unit of 'matter © known in the physical world--sat for an enlarged portrate Thursday, , In Franklin Institute, It was said to have been the first known at- tempt at such a picture, - . - It turned out to be not only a particle' of 'which every atom is made up, but a spider-like net of electrical waves which expand to many times the size of an electron, nd in its spider state, scientists 421d, the clectron was revealed as 2 powerful agent for transforming the general conception of space and substance. The demonstration was given by Prof. G. P. Thomson, of the Uni- versity of Aberdeen, Scotland, be- foros an audience of distinguished scientists and the faculty of the de- partment of physics of Lehigh Uni- versity. Light on Metallurgy In outlining his use of the "free" electron in determining the con- dition of the outer "kins" of metals used in industrial processes, Professor Thomas asserted that through his methods industrial chemists may be able to discover the manner in which catalyzers produce changes in chemical sudb- stances while undergoing no change themselves. He sald the catalyzing properties of metal coatings could be determined quite accurately and cheaply. Dr. Thomson told the scientists that in the process of discovering tangular molecules; upsetting, he sald, a classification of physicists which had persisted for years. His experiments, conducted first at the University of Aberdeen and continued at Cornell University, proved conclusively, Dr. Thomson declared, that the orthodox as par- ticles will have to be abandoned. Shrivels in Atom Dr. Thomson pictured the eiect- ron' when free from atomic con- straint and. travelling through un- hampered space ds assuming a form roughly conforming to the body of a spided, with electric ten- tacles and legs stretching out in every direction. , Whenever one of the electric tentacles struck an object it divert- ed the course of the eleetron con- BETTER HOCKEY IN NEN BRUNSWICK Bathurst Team, - Maritime Champions Faster Than Ever (By. W. J. Foley, Canadian Press Sports Writer) Halifax, Jan. 28---Unlike the situation in Nova Scotia, | the two teams that played off for the cham- pionship of New Brunswick last set- son, are again leading their leagues by substantial margins and bid fair At the present time" the to stage another honic and home ser- ies in the semi-finals for the Mari. time amateur hockev: championship, A filip of interest was added to the New Brunswick gamc last season when the Bathurst papermakers, champions of the Northern Section of the Provincidl league, tock the Maritime championship from the Nova Scotia titleholders, who had held it for five seasons. Bathurst has started the 1930 sca- son where it ended in 1929 and is un- defeated to date in league games, far in front in the Northern Letgue, In the Southern Section the Monc- ton Atlantics are still well to the fore although they are in a more spirited fight than the Maritime champions. Atlantics boast a®fair sized lead but may en- counter plenty of trouble from the rinkless Saint John Beavers, who have not as yet, hit their best stride, Both Bathurst and Moncton have better teams that last scason, The Papermakers havé been bolstered by young. Taylor, a husky: frontliner from "Up Above," and Joe Matte, a keen judge of hockey, who is teach ing the Maritime titleholders the finer Joints of the game. "Matte took the Halifax Wolverines from the Eastern Nova Scotia: League cellar last gea- son and put them in the finals for the Maritime title and plans to go fur- ther this season with the! team' that licked his 1929 charges, Moncton have added a few players, among whom is Tommy Radford, for years 'a star in Halifax, The Monc- tonians are playing better hockey than last season under Coach Drown, a Maritime veteran, The fight for the Maritime supre- macy promises to be much keener this season, witli better hockey being played in New Brunswick, Nova Sco- tia and Prince Edward Island. The Abegweits, of Charlottetown and the Crystals of Summerside are develop- ing young players- who may regain some of the glory that the Charlotte- town Abegweits boasted some sca- sons ago, when they won two consec- cutive Maritime crowns, Upper Canadian hockey authorities arc looking to the Maritime Provin ces to provide a finalist in the Allan Cup series this season. Many Upper i Canadian hockey coaches have been imported into the Maritimes and this, added to the fact that the Maritimes provided good competition last sea- son in the Canadian championship series, had led hockey leaders to be- lieve that the Allan Cup may go eas of Montreal for the first time since | the historic mug was first donated, COLDEST WEATHER FOR THIS WINTER Mercury Dipped Well Be- low Zero During the Week-end (By Canadian Press Leased Wire) Toronto, Jan. 28.--~The coldest wave of the winter struck Ontario over the week-end and for the first time the local meteorological office recorded the mercury below zero. Toronto was apparently the warm- | est part of a cold province, Parry Sound registered 26 below while | Cochrane was right behind with g reading of 24 below, Oftdwa ex. pericnced 20 below temperatures and London, Kingston, Windsor and other cities saw the thermo. meter dip well below the zero line, A blinding snowstorm added tg the discomfort of many citizens in Western Ontario, and Stinday night many roads and highways; were re- ported completely snowbound, Six Blinded by Drink Gary, Ind.--Six men were found groping their way along a Calumet city street Sunday night. They had been drinking alcohol, they told police. | All may 'be permanently blinded. 'The one member of the group whom police found rational, said the men had purchased the alcohol from a Hammond druggist, explaining that they wanted it te remove varnish. tinued to move forward with ap- parently undiminished velocity. Yet back in the atom an electron drew in these tentacles and became chiefly body, like a dead or un- scious spider, he said. Prince Louis De Broglie, French physicist, who last year was award- ed the Nobel prize for scientific achievement, first conjectured this dual nature of electrons from data observed in experiments, but Dr. Thomson and several colleagues were gaid to have been the first to scientifically satistactory way, the expansion properties of an electron and its spider-like appear- ance, he had found that nickel was not arranged in cubic but in re- France si for submarine limitation on land and cavalry imitation on sea. --Dallas News.
