STUDY AIR THIRTY MILES ABOVE EARTH Ozone Believed to Absorb Ultra-Violet Rays of Light Sydney, Australia, Sept. 28--The air 30 miles above the earth will be studied by the Sir Douglas Mawson Australian Antarctic expedition at the end of this year. It is perhaps the only polar expedition to attempt such lofty altitude penetration, The work will be done with a special spectroscope & photography to learn more about the reputed existence of a rich layer of ozone. These experiments are important, says Dr. Duffield, director of the Commonwealth observatory, for one thing because ozone is believed to ab- sorb the bulk of ultra- violet light, "Ozone," he says, "occurs 20 to 30 miles up. Bv taking part in the world-wide scheme of measurement of ozone originated at Oxford, Eng- land, we hope to find out more about the conditions under which it is for- med. vous "Experiments may show whether reception of wireless signals is in any way connected with ozone, for the place where it occurs is not far from the ozone of ionization that plays so important a part in the propagation of wireless waves." Sir Douglas already has more than 1,000 applications for the eight scien- tific berths on the expedition. This personnel will comprise a marine bio- logist, taxidermist, meteorologist, plankton, specialist, chemist, survey officer, echo-sounding specialist and a physician. There will be a crew of 28, and one photographer, one air- plane pilot and one air mechanic. The greater part of the scientific work will be in weather observation, soundings of ocean depths for the story they reveal about the nature of the land buried under Antarctica's ice, and plankton research--that is, study of the food supply of south polar fish. The expedition will sail in Scott's famous old ship, the Discovery, which left England in August headed for Capetown, South Africa, to pick up Sealed Tenders marked "Tender | ---- -- B. W.
