In 1916 several posts of Russian poplar (a very per- ishable species) were specially treated with creosote and were set in the ground in the spring of 1917. Ten years afterwards these posts were apparently as good as ever; on the other hand untreated posts of the same species of similar size totted out in the second and third years. In these days of thin clothes the apparel proclaims the women better than the man, -- Elizabeth (Ky.) News. . SWEDEN HAS LARGE SI0CK OF BISONS Expected to Increase Numbers--Once Near Extinction (By Canadian Press Leased Wire) Stockholin, Sept. 6.--Sweden now has the largest stock of bisons, or European buffalos, in the world, and it is expected that this rare animal will continue to increase in number, although it was previously threaten- ed with extinction. The bisons were originally imported to Sweden and have since been carefully kept and tended in a special preserve at Engel- aberg, in the province of Westmau- land. Similar work is being carried on with the beavers, which owing to in- discriminate shooting had practically disappeared in Sweden not long ago. Since eight years, attempts have been made to increase the beaver stock, and there are now about twenty pros- perous beaver colonies. The number of these animals is constantly grow- ing, thanks to strict protection and care. German hares and pheasants have also been imported and are thriving excellently in Sweden, Similar protection is being given through rigid game laws and super- vision to other big game of Swedish origin especially to the moose and the bear. The first mentioned is pro- tected from hunters throughout the entire year with the exception of a couple of weeks in the early autumn, and is therefore multiplying rapidly, The bear, "the king of the northern forest," is also safe from killers, and reports from the government domains in the north show that there is a fair number of bears roaming the Swedish Alps." This animal is quite popular, as it is ordinarily not dan~ gerous, but has the reputation for being rather harmless and good hu- mored unless it is attacked or wound. ed. Many other species of wild animals also enjoy the same protection, such as, for instance, the eagle and the swan. These legal protective meas- ures are heartily endorsed by public opinion, since the average Swede is traditionally fond of animals of all kinds. BLAME COURTS FOR DENVER DIVORCED Too Many Divorces Helped By Courts And Attorneys [] Denver, Col., Sept. 6.--Blame for the large number of divorces in Denver was laid to Denver courts and attorneys by District Judge George F. Dunklee. ; "There are too many divorces-- the courts and attorneys are help- ing them along," Judge Dunklee told a crowded courtroom, The court's comment came dur- ing hearing of a petition of Elfreaa Smith for temporary alimony from Norman B. Smith, train foreman for the Colorado & Southern nati- road. Smith, acting as his own coun- cil, complained he had been order- ell out of his own home by the man who served him with notice of a separate maintenance suit. "It's things like this that break up homes," the court continued. "There have been too many .cases where a wife swears out an affi- davit and the courts, without look- ing into the matter, issue orders that bring about conditions such as this. "There has been abuse by attor- neys and abuse by the courts. Some women imagine they can sue for di- vorce and obtain a home and a lot of money. Then comes the resuit --they wreck their own lives and the lives of their children. « "I have followed the history of these divorce cases. They all turn out the same. The husband pays for a little while and the children remain with the mother. Then the husband leaves the State and ali- mony payments cease. This 1s tue cause of the over-crowded orphan asylums." CONSTRUCTING DEVICE TO MEASURE LIGHT. Pasedena, Cal, Sept. 6--Dr. Albert A. Michelson, unable to go personal-] ly into outer space to achieve greater accuracy in measuring the velocity of light, is constructing a huge device that in effect brings a section of in- terstellar space to earth. Most of the travels of light are in the vacuum of interstellar space, and it is this kind of vacuum that Mich- elson will produce, in a straight iron pipe a. mile long and three feet in diameter, with the air pumped out. The reason for using this vacuum Is not interference by the atmospher with speed of light, but possibility ef HARDWOOD FLOORS LAID BY EXPERT MECHANICS Old floors faiehed like new, Storm windows, combination doors. The large vacuum tube is being con structed on an isolated level plain on the Irving ranch near Santa Ana, Cal, a spot chosen for its freedom from traffic vibration. In one end of the pipe will be a large reflecting mirror, In the other a little octagonal mirror, scarcely the size of a hens egg, will spin 60,000 times a minute under the drive of compressed air. A tuning fork will record the number of revolutions per second. Light, entering this octagonal mir- ror from the outside, will be reflect- ed to and fro the length of the pipe five times--a distance of five miles. An ingenious arrangement of mir- rors shuttles the light. At the end of the fifth round, the beam is deflected by the spinning mirror to instru ments set a little to one side. By measuring the angle of deflec- tion and the speed of the mirror, Michelson can compute the extremely small fraction of a second the light takes to travel five miles. Henry Ford Is To Solve Problem of Old Cars New York, N.Y., Sept. 6.--Henry Ford has been asked by Borough President Harvey of Queens to help solve the problem of dispos- ing of abandoned cars. Professing to see a situation which in time will tax the resourc- es of the nation for its elimination, Mr. Harvey requested Mr. Ford to Yead his automotive genius to abat- fag the nuisance of streets and va- cant lots littered with discarded automobiles. "We have yet to find an effect« ive method to combat this Frank- enstein monster," Mr. Harvey wrote. ' x "You have personal knowledge of the conditions caused in most of the nation's towns and cities by the promiscuous discarding of old cars. ~ P think your company should bear a large part of the responsibility for the elimination of the abandon- ed car problem." SIX OF FAMILY QUALIFY AS DOCTORS London, Sept. 6.----0Of the six children of Councillor J. T. Halli- ~ nan. Mayor of Lewisham, the bor- ough covering a large slice of Southeastern area of London, six have qualified for the medical pro- fession. His five sons are all doc- tors, and his daughter, Miss Eileen Hallinan, has just become quali- fied. All the sons served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in France. Why so many of the children should adept the medical profes- sfon is a circumstance which Mr. © and Mrs. Hallinan are unable to ex- plain. No other members of the family, either in the present. or the two preceding generations, have been associated with medicine, : The women of Quebec are clamor ing for permission to practice law.
