How this theory was proved and by what experiments, is interest- ingly told by Emily C. Davis, writ: ing in Science Service's "Science. News Letter." We learn that "Dr. Schaeffer was started off on this in- vestigation by one of the smallest animals in existence, a single-celled ameba, swimming in a glass of clear water. For several hours he ob- served the curving path taken by the tiny organism, and he became curi- ous to know whether other animals, and men too, are compelled to travel a crooked path in life if eyes and other senses fail to steer them. "After a light snowfall, the zoolo- gist and several students went out to a race-track, and each one set out blindfolded to walk in a straight line across the unbroken snow. To their surprise, when they studied the tracks in the snow, each path form: ed a clock-gpring spiral of great re- gularity. Sometimes an individual started off in a comparatively straight walk, but the path soon veered to right or left, and after 8 Limited - - In Building Your Home it Costs No More to Stop Fire By specifying Gyproc Wallboard you assure and ceilings that are efficient oR Ie yet the cost is no more, and often less than with . materials that give no fire protection whatever. Some circled left. Some var- fed occasionally, But generally an individual kept turning in the direc- tion first taken when he .started on a blindfold trip, "Dr, Schaeffer continued the ex- periments, He took students and in- structors out on big level fields in Kansas and Colorado and set them to walking blindfold, and" recorded the spiral paths they took. Hé turned a Ford coupe loose on a Kansas prairie. with .a series of blindfold drivers, or sometimes with a blind- fold. person sitting beside the. driver and directing the route, and the paths chosen by the .steerers were more spirals. He had blindfolded swimmers dive into the water and try to swim straight ahead, using various strokes; and diagrams of gheir swimming, carefully recorded, showed the same clock-spring spirals that were becoming so familiar, "After a-number of tracks were re- corded, it became evident that the same mechanism which caused the clpck-spring spirals in the experi- ments also cause the 'circles' when persons lose their way, The lost per- son's eyes simply become useless as orientating organs for distance. |." PREVENTION AND CURE OF CANGER May Be Cure Found, But "There Is Only Prevention Yet Chicago, Ills, Sept. 5.--Before the world is much older there may be a cure for cancer. But today there is no cure; prevention only. These three statements have. the emphatic. support of the Educational Committee of the Radiological society of North America, whose 1,200 mem- bers give much of their time with X-ray and radium to caring for can- cer sufferers. . Just 'how much of that scourge is known and the means taken to learn mere, willbe revealed at the society's annual cafveption, to be held Dec. 2 'to 7, at, Poraft, Ont, Dr. Maximilian J. "The cancer, problem appears to be approaching a solution," the so- ciety's educational] committee an- nounced here, "And while there is at "this ~time 'ne. dpecific remedy or means of prevention of cancer, indi cations point toward the probability of these being discovered before the world is much older. "At the present time early diag- nosis, combined with early treatment, by means of. surgety and X-rays, are the sapproved methods of 'treatment, and the removal of suspicious growths which might, or are liable to, develop into cancer, is the approved method of preventing it. "Sante forms of superficial cancer are best treated by ieans of the X- rays# The most important single ele- ment in regard to the eradication of cancer and cancer-producing condi- tions is early diagnosis, "Carefully matle. and thorough periodic examinations made by well- trained and qualified physicians, will bring to light cancer and pre-cancer- ous conditions and will go far te- wards lessening the death rate from this dread disease. Cancer is appar ently on the increase, but this in- crease is more apparent than real, because more gases of cancer are diagnosed than formerly and as many of thdse are diagnosed early, more of them are being gured. "With the present knowledge and facilities, it is possible to determine in a very high percentage of in- stances, whether malignant discase-- and by that we mean cancer in some form--is present, and if it is present and diagnosed early enough--the like- lihood of cure is as great if not greater than it ever was before."
