Her wheat crop, estimated at nearly 40,000,000 bushels in excess of her normal consumption, is one of the largest she has ever known. The yield from the vineyards is reported good as is that from the beet and potato crop. Despite reductions in taxation re- venue receipts for July shows an in- crease of $51,480,000 over July, '1928, and amount to $30,440,000 more than the budget estimate. It is calculated that, if the present tax yield con- tinues, the French Treasury by the end of the year will have $24,000,000 more than was expected. In addition the flow of American tourist traffic is greater than ever. In the restaurants, particularly in thosc where tourist prices' prevail, English is spoken more commonly than French, Continental excursions from Eng- land have become so common that methods are. being discussed with a view to popularizing British resorts for home patronage and at the same time attracting a greater measure of trans-Atlantic tourist trade. : Immigration Question And while Great Britain is still casting about for a solution of her unemployment problem, France, since the war, has been a country of immi- gration. She has imported large bod- ies of foreign labor, both for her farms and her workshops. Senator Jules Hayaux observes that despite the influx of foreign farm workers, the French agricultfral dis- tricts still need labor. He urges fa- mily migration with housing schemes with a view to keeping the migrants permanently cmployed on the land, There should be, M. Hayaux argues, a real system of internal colonization both for foreign immigration and for French people leaving onc district for another. He illustrates what can be done with the case of a large number of Breton families who were planning to move to Canada. "his exodus, he says, "Was going to deprive France of precious labor." The families were induced to give up the idea of migration to Canada, and move to Dordogne in the South of France 'where the results "passad all hopes." "We learn from statis- tics," the Senator adds. "That in February, 1927, there were 350 Bre- ton familes in Dordogne, of which 300 were doing excellently. These families remained in touch with their old province and their success brough in other families. The migration from Britanny to Dordogne still continues," The waist line is coming back to its normal place, if anybody re- members where that is.--Brandon Sun. SPICES OF LIFE THREATENED BY NEW PROCESSES] Even Calorific Value of Blankets May Vanish if Denaturing Continues New York -- "American scien- tists," says an English newspaper, "have been Iinvesigaintg denico- tinized tobacco. It seems that no process has been discovered where- by nicotine can be entirely re- moved from tobacco." And, surely, a good thing too. Salt that hag lost its savor is henceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trod- den under the foot of man. In one or two decades' time one may well be reading that "Ameri- can scientists have been investigat- ing desucrated sugar." Then when the process has been discovered the landladies will be able to say that they did put sugar in the tea when they didn't. In the same way they now say that they have fed the fur- nace with low-temperature de-car- bonized coal, when they wish to ac- count for the fact that the hot water bottle is frozen in the bed in the morning. In the event of the success of the "American scientists" in deni- cotinizing tobacco, there will be an outbreak of attempts to make everything innocuous. The time will come when earth will not be dirty and sunshine will not be light and neither cinnamon nor life will have any spice. This whole process of thought is the reaction to the objection that William Shapespeare had to paint- ing the lily and gilding refined gold, "Science" has surely taken gilt off enough gingerbread to pre- vent any necessity for its taking any off the gold. "Science" of a sort seems to have taken Shake- peare's advice so much to heart that it is now proceeding to take the perfume from the violet, to roughen ice, to take the color from the rainbow and the light from "the beauteous eye of heaven." In this perfectly denatured world a man will rise in the morning from a bed with woolen blankets from which the calorific value has been removed. He will put on clothes that might for all the good they do, be non-existent. For example, they will probably take away the "s' from trousers. The man will sit down on a seatless chair at a leg- less table, to eat a breakfast com- posed of coffee made without beans bread made without wheat and eggs made without hens, He will go to an office from which all the typewriters and pens and ink have been extracted, or to a shop which has had the customers all killed. He will return at night to a supper of beans without pork, then go to bed and spend the night without a wink of sleep. The attempt to denicotinize to- bacco leads one to believe that the time has already come when the scientist has descientized himself, Dangerous Days For Women If These Men Win As a counterblast to the success of the feminist movement througu- out the world, the hominists--if that is what they are called--are now on the move, "Aequitas'"' or the "World's League for the Rights of Men" is holding a congress in Vienna for a week from Sept. 25. The notices calling the congress promise "all facilities for a com- fortable stay in Austria." The thought of this League and its congress brightens life with the prospect of the day when '"man to man the world o'er shall brithers be an' a' that," and there will be as few sisters as possible. It is a curious commentary on the unintelligence of men that they have just, after so many centuries of servitude, wakened up to the fact that it is about time that they had equal rights with women. The "hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" in some mysterious way. It seems to administer some sort of opiate to the male contents of the cradle so that when he steps out of it into a hard world, he firm- ly believes that he is the lord of creation and that women are his in- feriors in fact as well as in theory. He might as well suppose that he is the ruler of the waves because he can sometimes sit on them in a boat or the controller of a volcano because he can dance on the top of it .or that he is sailing under his own steam when he is merely drift- ing with the current or that he has just jumped a fence when a bull has tossed him over. W. E. Henley seems to have heen quite convinced that he was "the master of his fate and the captain of his soul"; but one wonders what HARDWOOD FLOORS LAID | BY EXPERT MECHANICS O14 floors finished like new. He probably had to get a new pair of boots every time he wag told to, just as any other man hag The members of the Aequitas League are under no such delu- sion. "The distress of men is the cry of the day everywhere!" they announce, and they propose the congress "in order to protest against the unjust state" of the laws! which differentiate in women's fa- vor and to "discuss means whereby the authorities could be prevailed upon to amend the obsolete laws in conpection therewith." Some men are incurable optimists, and the secretary of the League seems to be one of them. He will lure tne downtrodden men to Vienna far more by his promises of "all facill- ties for a comfortable stay."" The chief comfort is the paucity of wo- men expected at the congress, pre- sumably. From enquiries that have been made it seems that there are no men going from Oshawa to the con- gress. Perhaps they go secretly in dead of night and never let on where they are going. In any case their ledve-taking must be simpli- city itself, apart from the duplicity that they will have to exercise 0 their wives beforehand. Not for them the passionate and painful leavetaking which is such a sorry pleasure for all those that go to foreign lands--weeping wives and wailing children, wet handker- chiefs and reddened eyes. "No wide eyes watching" for their return. More of a withering than a "with- ered welcome walting their re turn." Not for them the reminis- cences that characterized the ordin- ary conversation of the returned traveller. Stony gilence and unveil« ed suspicion. Their wives will never ask who made the best speech at the congress and what it was about. oy ---------------------- \ w SEALED TENDERS addressed fo the un- dersigned, and endorsed "Tender for Breakwater Reconstruction, Whitby, Ontar- io," will be received" until 12 o'¢l "non (daylight saving), Friday, September 6, 1929, for the Reconstruction of 506 feet of the sup- erstructure ot the South Breakwater at Whit- by.
