' (31-b) BRITAIN REDUCES SIZE OF HER FLEET For Third Time in Century Major Naval Strategy Altered London, Aug. 8.--For the third time in a century the major naval strategy of this country has been altered. That is the meaning of an announcement printed in small type-and without comment by news- papers that four great battleships are to be brought from Mediter- ranean waters to home ports, os- tensibly for three reasons----so that officers and men can get more home leave, because facilities at Malta are limited and because the harbor there tends to get uncomfortably crowded. Ships involved are the battleships Queen Elizabeth 'and three post- Jutland super-dreadnoughts, the Barham Valiant and Malaya. When these ships return to home waters in November, they, together with super-dreadnoughts now here, will constitute the first battle squad- ron. Strength in battleships in the Mediterranean will be reduced from ten capital ships of the latest con- struction to five or six, and these are not so powerful as those which are to come home. Two facts of significance are learned about these unexpected disarmament plans. Britain will not scrap cruisers, as some Ameri- can despatches indicate. Some at Washington think she ought to do so in order that the U.S. can catcn up in post Washington treaty crui- gers. She is not unwilling to scrap certain battleships. One of these may be the Benbow and:two other battleships almost ready to be rele- gated to reserve. In any case, the Emperor of In- dia and the Marlborough which do not embody lessons learned at Jut- land, might be sacrificed in an ef- fort to reduce tonnage in a naval agreement with the United States. Should certain first-line battle- ships be scrapped, the readjust- ment just made would give Britain in the Atlantic battle fleet besides four ships now to be brought from Malta the Nelson and the Roaney, Britain's two most powerful war- ghips. The Iron Duke, .Jellicoe's flagship at Jutland, has' arreaay been withdrawn from the first line and willbe used as a gunnery train- ingabhip. Ci THIRTY SEVEN YEARS IN YUKON Bishop Stringer Regards His Work Not Yet Com- Pleted Vancouver, B.C., Aug. 8--Bishop I ©. Stringer of the Yukon, has al- ready spent thirty seven eventful years in the northern wilderness of Canada, but he regards his work as not nearly completed, "My present problem," Bishop Stringer said recently, "is three-fold. In the first place there are yet In- dian tribes to be evangelized--Sticks, Chilcots and Thlinkets. Then the half-breeds and the poor whites and the isolated miners need more min- istrations, In Dawson I have a hos~ tel where the halfbreed children can be housed under - Christian care while attending the government school. I have secured part of the old hospital, built in the days of Dawson's prosperity and disused now that the gold rush population has shrunk. 1t needs extending, for the work must go on. Missionaries dre required in the Ross River and Mayo mining districts, too." It was in 1892 that Bishop String- er madeshis first journey down the MacKenbie River and began his la- bors, first at Fort MacPherson and then for six years at Herschel Is- land, perhaps the most northerly point of the British Empire. In those days the Eskimo had an evil reputation, but as a missionary Mr. Stringer went among them, liv< ing their life in their snow huts, and their evangelization has gone on with such blessing that along 500 miles of that Arctic coast every na~- tive is a convert of the Anglican thissions. Then came a change. After two years of missionary work in White- horse, in the great Yukon valley, Mr. Stringer was appointed to suceed Bishop Bompas in the see then call- ed Selkirk and now, more intelligi- bly, Yukon, In 1905 the great Klon- dyke rush had spent its force, gold mining was passing from the scram- ble of individuals into the hands of companies, and the great white pop- ulation had begusf to shrink. With some flickering revivals it has gone on declining as mines were worked out and no new mining areas were discovered, until now there are only a few thousand white men left in the whole of the diocese, four times as large as England. There remain the half-breeds, the Indians, the poor whites, and in the northern part of the diocese the Eskimo. The journeys which the visitation of the various stations involves are enormous. To get to the southern most of them from Dawson the bish- op must travel 500 miles up the Yu- kon River. To get to Fort Mac- Pherson the shortest way is to get up the smaller streams, then through the defiles of the Rockies, where there is no trail for a hundred miles, but a string of bogs between hills. "I have walked it several times," says the Bishop. "My wife walked it two years ago." Brown, of "Big Five," Assigned to Mystery London, Aug, 8.~Scotland Yard with, a record showing only fonr unsolved cases out of 109 murders in the past five years, i+ faced with the duty of determinging who murdered two m2mbers of the Sidney family, and probably a third. The British public which has been following the slow unravel- ling of the manner of the deaths by a coroner's jury looks expec- tantly to the famous detective force to take action momentarily, now that the coroner's verdicts are in. The third verdict, that of the inquest on Edmund Creighton Duff was returned yesterday, and was of wilful murder by a person or persons unknown, as had earlier been reported in the case of his sister-in-law, Vera Sidney, Although the jury h:1 found that Mrs. Violet Sidney, moher of Vera, was also poiusoned, it did not find in her case that the evi- dence was conclusive of murder, No Motive Apparent As in his previous charges to. the jury, the coroner yesterday was explicit in telling the jury that while members of the family had been in position to administer the poison, as it was with intimate knowledge of the personal habits of each of the victims, the family appeared to have been entirely congenial, and that no evidence had been produced pointing to a motive. It was learned last night that Superintendent Brown, one of the "Big Five" of Scotland Yard, had taken over personal supervision of the investigation of the murders. Detective Inspector Hedges, who has been working on the case since last March, will assist. BANDITS HOLD UP ROADHOUSE GUESTS Take $20,000 in Cash and Gems From Fashionable Habitues Chicligo, Aug. 8. ~The wealthy and fashionable golf element of the Flosmoor and Olympia Country clubs were compelled by the con- vincing appeal of machine guns and automatics to contribute some $20,000 in cash and jewels to the pockets of six bandits.
