The Democratic na- tional committee office said it was "nothing 'new for 'foreign coun- tries to register disapproval of tar- iff levies against their products, but never in the whole history of our taritf raising has resentment been so deep or umiversal." SIDNEY LOGAN FATALLY INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT Wife of General Manager of Bank of Commerce, Toronto Toronto, July 10.--Mrs. Frances May Logan, wife of Sydney H. Lo- gan, general manager of the Cana- dian Bank of Commerce, Dunvegan road, Toronto, died in the York County Hospital, Newmarket, = ut 8.30 last night from injuries she suffered earlier in the afternoon when the car in which she was ria- ing north of Bradford was side- swiped in an automobile collision. The accident occurred during a rainstorm. Mrs. H. W. Burgess. wife of Cor- oner Dr. Herbert Burgess, of 122 Glen Manor Drive, a passenger in the car with Mrs. Logan, was ug- mitted to the hospital suffering from minor injuries, and was. later able to be removed to her home in Toranto. Neither John Tllingworth, chauf- feur for the Canadian Bank of Commerce, of 356 Davisville ave- nue, Toronto, nor E. D. Babcoek of Barrie, drivers of the two cars in- volved in the accident, was injured. "Mrs. Logan died chiefly from shock. She had no fractures, but was cut about the head and was slightly bruised," said officials of the York County Hospital. "She died at 8.30 p.m." (Standard time), An inquest is to be held under Dr. J. H, Wesley, Newmarket Cor- oner. With Family for Six Years John Illingworth, 356 Davisville avenue, the chauffeur who has been driving for the Logan family for six years, was driving the big car along the Yonge highway yes- terday. He was driving north on a slight downward slope opposite the farm of F. Kneeshaw, between the 13th and 14th concession, when: he iuo- ticed a truck ahead of him. It ap- peared to be travelling slowly so Illingworth decided to drive ar. ound it to the left side of the road. An appalling crash. followed. 1 ne big car, struck at the rear of the right side by a smaller sedan driven by E. V. Babcock, of Barrie, skid- ded around on one side and slid in- to the west ditch. It did not turn over. The other car, rebounding with the impact, shot across the slippery pavement into the east ditch. R A few hundred yards further along the highway was parked the limousine of Mrs. Harriet Bacque, well-known Newmarket woman. "It was hailing and raining so hard," Mrs. Bacque said last mignt over the long distance phone, "that I told my chauffeur to stop the car until it was all over. The highway was very dangerous yesterday.' "All of a sudden, through the sound of the rain, we heard the most awful crash. . My chauffeur immediately started the car and we only had to drive a few feet to find the two cars, one on each side of the 'road, in the ditch." James Carter is Mrs. Bacque's 'chauffeur. Showing plenty of presence of mind, he jumped from ousine in the ditch, "I think that James acted splen- didly. He just opened the door of that car, picked Mrs. Logan up and brought her over into my car: She was "bleeding terribly. Then: he went back again and took Mrs. Burgess from the car." ! A number of bronze pipes, a bronze faucet, a copper "shingle and some terra cotta ornaments are among the objects recently recovered from the galleys or from the lake bed where they have rested for hundreds of years. Although experts have not 'ex- pressed a definite opinion in regard to fhe outfitting" of the ancient gal- leys at. the time they were used by the Emperor Caligula for pleasure cruises, the findings -announced:in- dicated that they may have been even more luxuriously and -modernly pro= vided than historians believe. The pipes and faucets offered evidence that the richly decorated cabins. had been provided with running water and the lavish fittings indicate that the vessels were "as comfortably equipped as ocean liners of many cen- turies - later. ; Caligula was known as a cruel and almost barbarous ruler. He often used these ancient galleys to escape from the city with a eompany of friends and a group of beautiful wo- men. Many stories, some of which are well'founded, tell of the emperor sometimes caused the women tobe thrown from the galley after drink- ing orgies, Archaelogists, carpenters and other workers have been especially busy around the galley lately, The parts which have been detached are care- fully examined and then laid aside for later study. Photographers and artists are busy copying them for the time when the galleys will be re- constructed in a museum beside the volcano crater lake, FOR SALE 85 Acres of Standing Hay. some of which is straight Alfalfa, and the remainder mived Clovers and Timothy.
