SEC. SECTION=--P. 15-22 VOL. 4--NO. 120 MAY 24th On Friday, the Dominion of .Canada is on holiday. Young and old, the people of Canada spend the day en fete, either in going off somewhere, with their baskets, to picnic, in paying a visit to friends or relatives in other places, or, as many are doing, in spending the day quietly at home, doing some of the seasonal garden chores, enjoying perhaps, a quiet game of golf, or a fishing trip to some nearby angling grounds. In every village, hamlet, town or city in Canada, from Brookling to Toronto, from Halifax to Vancouver, people will be doing the same thing--if it doesn't rain. And because it is Victoria Day, in honor of the great Queen Victoria, people are hoping that the weather man will be kind, will make up for his mistakes of the last few months, and provide a day of glorious sunshine. Even the oldest of us can remember the childhood associations of Victoria Day, when we used to sing: "The 24th of May is the Queen's Birthday, If we don't get a holiday, we'll all run away." But it will not be necessary for anyone to run away on that account. All the boys and girls in the schools, the workers in the factories and shops, and the clerks in the offices, will be free to do as they like for a glorious 24th of May Holiday. Old boys and young boys will find their fun in setting off firecrackers, and in having a gen- eral good time, and no one will think of asking, 'Why, the Celebration?" Because, as everyone knows, May 24 is the day, when the British Empire honors good Queen Victoria, who was born on May 24, 1819, became Queen of Great Britain and Ireland in 1837, and ruled over the British peoples everywhere until 1901, when she died in the sixty-fourth year of her reign, at the age of nearly 82. When he became king, her grandson, George V, ex- pressed the wish that the British people should 'every, year celebrate her birthday, and so it is being done, here in Canada, and elsewhere throughout the Empire, on Friday of this week. Year after year, the name of 'Good Queen Vicioria is honored and revered by the British people, because her force of character, her honesty of heart, and her love | of her le were the outstanding characteristics which make her one of the greatest of British monarchs. Friday will be a day of holiday-making, but in'our fun and frolic, let us not forget the reason for the holi- day, nor the honored memory of the Queen after whom = | it has been named. HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS A db For clean wholesome enter- tainment Oshawa people do not need to leave the city for the koliday." Probably no other city in Canada the size of Oshawa has the facilities for passing an enjoyable day's outing than right here. Besides its sport- ing attractions the Motor City has provision for thousands of people at the lake front in Lake- view Park which has become widely known throughout the province. This spacious picnic grounds is equipped with a mer- ry-go-round and a ferris wheel while many improvements have . beep made to make the spot as attractive as possible. Two dancing pavilions, the Jubilee and Barnhardt's, cater to the youthful and nimble footed. The feature sporting atirac- tion of the day is to be the open- ing of the Central Ontario Base- ball League at Aléxandra Park. Interest in this league runs high in all the cities that have teams entered and it is expected that thousands will throng the park to witness the first encounter of the approaching season. Oshawa have as their opponents in this opening game the strong Peter- boro team that are rated as be- ing much stronger than the nine that represented them last year in the Central Ontario Loop. The local nine is also comprised of a host of mew talent and | much is expected of these ball players the most of who are young and are alse old residents of this city. ® ® » Soft ball games will be play- ed throughout the city the most of them being staged at Alex- andra Park, they too will draw their quote of enthusiasts and supporters. Girls' softball in Oshawa on the holiday will be .conspicious by its absence, as two: of the three teams here are competing * | in the girls' softball tournament being held in Brooklin on that . day, so that an exodus to that village 1s likely. "Victoria The Good" oF SS 2 tor J H. M. Queen Victoria i) I 1 9), N MAY 24th, 1819, 109 years ago, "Victoria CD 4 OTe Good" was born in old England. For al? more than three-quarters of a century that date has been observed all through the British Empire ---the birthday anniversary of England's best-loved sovereign. ARTY By a strange combination of circumstances, marriages and deaths, Victoria became heir to the throne of England, and when little over 18 years of age, she became queen upon the death of her uncle, William IV, on June 21, 1837. She married in 1840 Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and her second child suc- ceeded her as King Edward VII. | During her reign, the longest of any English Sovereign, Britain went through trying times, including the Crimean war, the South African war just before her death, and in between, many troubles at home. But through it all she continued to gain the respect and admiration of her people, and never has a reigning sovereign been given a more sincere acclaim than the Golden and Dia- mond Jubilee celebrations of her ascendency to the throne, held in 1887 and 1897. Mourned by the world, She died on January 22, 1901. | Victoria day has since been a public holiday throughout the Empire, and on the request of King George, is observed more widely than his own birthday. Victoria Day will be fittingly observed in Oshawa on Friday. | OSHAWA MERCHANTS WEEK 111]
