The resignations of four of its six members were delivered to Mayor McBride's office yesterday af- ternoon in the form of a letter com- piled at « luncheon which the com- missioners tendered to Norman D, Wilson, director-general and consults ing engineer of the commission, who leaves for Brazil today. The resig- nations are said to be irrevocable. Those signing the letter, which was addressed to the mayor, board of con- trol, and members of the city coun cil, were H. H, Willjams, chairman of the commission, Thomas Brad- shaw, R. Home Smith, and Allan Ross. J. H. Gundy and E. L, Cous- ins, the two other members of the commissions, are out of town, but it is understood they have not changed their mind since agreeing with the commission's report, which presumed that the advisory city planning coms mission will now ccasc to function. BERLIN SCENE OF WORST CLASH IN MAY DAY RIOTS EIGHT KILLED, 78 IN- JURED IN GERMA CAPITAL Disturbances in Other Places Were Largely of Minor Character Berlin, May 2.--Communists in an attempt to 'conquer the streets" for May day, caused an ugly riot last night in the working class quarter in northern Berlin, They erected barricades, using street repair material and held off police with rifle and pistol fire un- til armored cars forced tne ob- structions -and enabled the auth- orities to clear out the surrounding houses, . At midnight the casualtieg for the day had mounted to eight dead and 78 seriously injured, Hundreds of others * suffered bruises from missiles or police- men's' clubs. The rioters erected barricades in the main thoroughfare of tne Pankstrasse and its side streets, The police charged them repeated- ly with batons until the command- ing officer realized that his force { slovakia showed that all attempts was too weak for these tactics and ordered his men to open fire. Then armored cars were brought up and the police finallly captured the barricades. Communist ambulances and tirst aid squads were overwhelmed by, number of vietims brought trom) the fighting front. Fighting was also reported from eastern and southeastern parts of the city. Those sections were plunged into darkness. Clashes in Austria Vienna, May 2. -- With the ex- ception of a few sporadic clashes in the provinces between radical and fascist elements, May day was without serious trouble in Austria. Reports to the Associated «ess from Greece, Bulgaria, Roumania, Hungary, Jugoslavia and Czecho- at mass manifestations by either socialists or communists were rig- idly forbidden by police and that the orders were enforced. Quiet Day in France Paris, May 2.--May day passed off calmly in France as tens of thousands of workers took the day off, while police and soldiers saw to it that everyone who wanted to work could do so without mlesta- tion. In the provinces there was a great deal of oratory, many meet- ings and parades of both Socialist and Communist organizations, but no violence However, there were almost 3,- 500 arrests in the metropolitan dis- trict, most of them not because of trouble-making, but simp:y us u preventive measure, Among those kept at police stations all day long were many Communist leaders'and agitators. speed is facturing service.
