PAGE EIGii 1 RAS ------------e THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1929 | JOHNN Bloor Race Winner Triumphs In Annual Boston Marathon Second Time in Four Yeafs the Little Canadlisn Has Crossed First -- Previous Record Bested by Almost Four Minutes Boston, Mass., April 20.--Little " Johnny Miles, now of Hamilton, once of Sydney Mines, reeled them off yesterday in record-breaking style and crossed the finish line in the Boston marathon, the win- ner for the second time in four years. The Canadian legs and heart and lungs carried the dim- inutive lad 26 miles 385 yards in two hours 3 minutes 8 4-6 seconds. They broke the record made ast year by Clarence Demar, six times winner, by almont four minutes. \liles incidentally acquired the Na- jonal Amateur Athletic Union's marathon championship, which goes over the border for a year to repose under the maple leaf with various other titles held by Percy W'lliams, Ethel Cathierwood, et al. Miles is the sixth Canadian to win the historic marathon and the second Canadian double winner. J. Caffrey of Hamilton won in 1900 and returned the next year to win again. Miles won in 1926, setting up a record which was voided when the course was measured and found short. Another good Canadian, Wil- liam Taplor of Sydney Mines, up- held the prowess of the Mariumes by taking sixth place in yesterday's race. He ran a heady and gritty course but did not have the speed of the leaders, Montreal was rep- resented by G. Routsalaines, who slipped . in behind Taplor and fol- lowing him was a Britisher, Rol- and O'Toole of St. John's, Nfld. The French-Canadian led the man from the island by about two min- utes. Karl Koski of. New York was gecond and Willie Kyronen; his Finnish-American clubmate, thira in the race of 1929. Whitey Mich- elson of the Millrose A.A., New Pork, who raced shoulder to shoul- der with miles for 25-miles landed fourth place in 2 hours, 37 min- utes 22 1-5 seis. The Boston race has always been Whitey's "Jonah" though he was more impressive yesterday than in previous years. MONTREAL WINS FROM NEWARK Newark, April 20.--The Montre- al Royals made it two straight over Newark Bears here yesterday by the score of 6 to 4, ' JERSEY CITY TAKES SECOND Jersey Cit,y, April 20. -- Jersey City took tHe second game of the series from Buffalo yesterday by the score of 8 to 4. Buffalo was leading 4 to 2 in the fifth inning, but in the Jersey's half of the fifth Walsh doubled to centre scoring Selkirk and Wera and tied the score. ST, LOUIS LOSES FIRST St. Louis, April 20. -- The St. Louis Browns lost their first game of the season yestérday, the Chi- cago White Sox taking the final of the series 5 to 4, The Box were held scoreless until the eighth when Crogie and Metzler hit home runs, Metzler's blow. coming with one on, to drive Coftmdn from the motind. Doubles by Clancy and Kathi kfiotted the count. Then in the ninth Cissell and Metzler work- ed a double steal, Cissell coming home with the winning run, HOMERS WIN FOR TORONTO ' (By Canadian Press Leased Wire) Baltimore, Md., April 20.--The Leafs clipped Andy Chambers; Balfimore's good right-hander, for only three hits in the third game of the series here yesterday, but two of the hits were liners into the right-field bleachers by Fred Be- dore and Les Burke, , The round trippers spoiled a swell pitching effort by Chambers, and gave the Leafs a 2-to-1 victory, their second of the set, with one game to play. The homer by Bedore was poled in the opening inning, and Burke connected for his in the second. During the rest o. the yame Cham- bers yielded one hit, a single by Abe Martin in the third inning, the Toronto southpaw failing ww get past second base. The other lone scoring chance for the O'Neill clan bobbed up in the sixth. Bill Sweeney slapped to short and Joe Bones threw the ball past Ocslow, the former Tiger pulling up at the half-way bag. Burke's bunt advanced Sweeney to third, but he went no further, Sheedy and Cot> being soft for Chambers. Not a base on balls was grafted by Chambers, who retired the side in order in five of the nine innings and the Oriole was unfortunate in being turned back by home- runs, as was Jess Doyle on Thurs- day. Chambers fanned six, three in the last two innings, and Rabbit, Sweeney, Bedore, O'Neill, Sheedy and Cote were the strike-out vice tims. Chambers had everything, plenty of stuff, and he was able to put the ball almost where he pleas- ed. GIANTS WIN EASY BATTLE Philadelphia, April 20,--The Gi- ants pounded the Phillies for the second successive time to take a 14-to-5 victory. The heavy hitting of the New Yorkers was the only feature of the game. They ham- mered out 20 hits off Roy, Elliott and Collins, starting with seven runs in the opening inning. Jim- my Welsh contributed a homer to this onslaught, The Phils got three runs in their half of the first added anothér on Cy Williams homer in the sixth, and one more in the seventh. > "Mighty Monarch of the Air" MAJESTIC Model No. 72 Beautiful Louis XVI Walnut bird's-eye maple panel. Mathieson now fights Tommy Iball of Winipeg for the Dominion Crown. Iball defeated a fighter from his own home town on Thursday night when he was forced to go an extra round to obtain the decision from Tommy Whitehead of Winnipeg. Although the weather is not exactly made to order there should be a number of teams throughout the city in all lines of sport out on the field and diamond this afternoon. Two teams in the City and Industrial softball league have signified their intentions of getting a practice so as to be that much ahead of the flock. There is also a soccer practice and a game in Toronto this pm, The game is in Toronto at Con oy Park with the Oshawa Nationals opposing the Toronto Crescents while the Oshawa City will get in some valuable practice at Alexandra Park. The Oshawa Ladies' Softball Executive held a meeting last night and the main item on the Agenda was the securing a park to play in that would be most suitable for girls games. yuestion had to be left over until later. ) distributing of the playing certificates and also certificates for After a lengthy discussion the Business transacted last was the obtaining amateur cards. HACKETT AND EDGERTON WINS BOUTS IN BUFFALO Buffalo, April 20.--Sam Hac- kett of Toronto easily outpointed Mickey Leon here last night in one of the preliminary bouts, while his stable-mate, Frankie "Red" Edgerton, was somewhat unlucky in only getting a draw with Alplo DeCruz, a Filipino, in a flyweight affair. Edgerton made a big hit with the crowd and the drawn deci- sion was by no means popular as DeCruz was in trouble in the last round. DeCruz recently came to Buffalo, being brought here by Frisco Grande, and he has a rec- ord of 22 wing and a draw in his last 23 bouts.
