Each line is equipped with two hooks. The fish are found in place where the water is about a hundred feet deep, close to the bottom. One of the peculiarities of "ice fish" fishing is that the line used must not stretch. This is--when the fisherman feels a nibble he is able to snap the hook in to the fish's mouth immediately. Otherwise the landlocked smelt has escaped before the tug at the line is registeréd 100 feet below. -A piece of salt pork is the usual bait used to catch the first fish. Then a piece about three inches long is cut from the side of the fish to serve as bait for the next victim. The "ice fish" are about a foot long and of a silvery color. The fish are Ro only where there is a noticeable current in the water, which lends support to the be- lief that the fish are really a species of salt water smelt, AEROPLANE INDUSTRY SHOWING INCREASES New York, March 22, -- Aircraft Yearbook figures just issued by the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America show an increase of 140 per cent. in commercial aircraft pro- duction in 1928, Approximately 5,000 planes and 3, 500 aircraft motors were built in the United States last year with a valua-~ tion of more than $75,000,000, Of these 3,780 were commercial ships and 2,087 were commercial motors, the rest being for military use.
