A German friend recently asked the opinion of the Irish dra- matist and wit of the recently an- nounced invention of the Russian professor Brjuchenenko, who kept a severed head of a dog alive for more than three hours by means of a pumping arrangement. Shaw replied: "I find the Brju- chenenko experiment frightfully in- teresting, but cannot imagine any- thing sillier than the suggestion to try it on a criminal sentenced to death. HOWE FORBUSH WAS WIDELY KNOWN AS ORNITHOLOGIST Wrote Many Volumes on Bird Life--Held Import- ant Positions Boston, Mar. 22.--Dr. Edward Howe Furbush, who died recently, was widely known as an author- ity on ornithology and as an auth- or of many volumes on the subject. He was born at Quincy, Mass., on April 24, 18568, the son of Leander Pomeroy and Ruth Hudson (Carr) Forbush. He married Etta L. Hill, of Upton, Mass., June 28, 1882, Dr. Forbush was ornithologist of pt the Massachusetts Board of Agri. culture when forced under the age limitation for state employees to retire April 24, 1928, at the age of 70 years. When he was seven years old his family removed to West Roxbury and later to Worcester, Mass. It was in these two places that the child received his early education. From the first his interest in birds was uppermost and much of his study was devoted to their habits. When he ygs only 16, he was made curator o e museum of the Wor- cester Natural History Society, He also began his" contributions to newspapers on bird life at about that time, an avocation which he continued almost until his death. In 1877, Dr. Forbush visited Florida and spent three months ex- ploring and collecting natural his- tory material.
