This is due to the fact that the companies all received a setback last year with the ice conditions in Lake St. Peter. It will be re- called that the liners were all in Quebec on schedule time, ready to proceed to Montreal, but this was impossible, as the ice had jammed badly in Lake St. Peter, which was not freed for a few days. The Canadian Pacific ships and a Cunarder were forced to make the turn-round at Quebec. Extra FOR SALE--BRICK BUNGALOW, 5 rooms. All conveniences. Good garage. Side drive. This year, the companies are guarding against a repetition 'of this, and have mutually agreed tv make the first sailings one week later, the first ships making the westbound voyage from Liverpoot to Montreal on April 17, arriving in Montreal on April 26 or 27, and returping from Montreal to the other side on May 4. Increased Sailings Despite the reduction eof the season, it is stated that there will be an increase in the mumber of eailings, all companies being pre- pared to operate a much bigger channel service, which has been developed in the past two or three Who said the spirit of adven- ture is dying? Chicago gained 75,000 in population in 1928.-- R ' Dr. BR. ¥. Gardiner, chief of the Horticultural Department, Michigan, visited the Dominion Experimental Farm, Kentville, and inspected the farm buildings and laboratories. Kitch Stick-to-it-iveness is what makes 2 girl marry the boss after he's | DOMINIONS MOST INTERESTED IN THE APPROACH TO U.S. Consultation With Canada Will Take Place on Disarma. ment Question London, Feb, 18--Information will be sought in parliament today on the latest developments in. Anglo-Ameri- can - relations, The question has been brought to the front by the statement issued by Sir Esme How- ard, liritish Ambassador at Wash- ington, that Great Britain would move for resumption of naval dis- armament discussions, But while the reply Sir Austen Chamberlain, foreign secretary, will make to questions is not likely to throw much additional light on the matter, onc dominant fact emerges from the situation, namely, that no new British proposals will be submit ted to Washington until the govern- ments of the dominions are consult- cd, This, already indicated in press despatches a few days ago, is now fully confirmed in a week-end com- munique issued by the foreign office which states that the British govern- ment is now examining all questions affecting the relations between the two countries, "This examination," the communi- que says, "is being diligently prose cuted, As soon as it is concluded, the first step will be to communi- cate its results to the governments of the dominions and to receive and consider their replies." The plan, it is understood, is to endeavor, with the co-operation of the dominions, to formulate a policy which will represent not merely the views of Downing street but of the whole British commonwealth, Canada Vitally Interested There is a feeling here that in view of her necessarily more intim- ate relations with the United States, the Dominion of Canada more than the other dominions is in a position to play an especially important role in the coming discussions. Although official announcements are scanty in the extreme, it seems clear that a new line of approach to the whole situation is finding con- siderable support in British official circles. This view holds, briefly, that nothing is to be gained by having the naval experts of the two coun- tries renew discussions on relative cruiser strength, Such, it is pointed cut, was the rock on which the trip- artite naval conference at Geneva broke. It led again to the rejection by the United States of the ill-fated Anglo-French compromise, SUNDAY WORK FOR CHEESE INDUSTRIES BASIS OF DISCUSSION Toronto, Feb, 18.--Sunday work for cheese factories was the basis of more discussion at the annual meeting of the Federated Dairy Associations of Ontario, held recently at the Par- liament Buildings, The Presidents of the Eastern, Western and Central Ontario se Associations were on hand to show why they needed to keep various plants open on the Sab- bath Day, and General Secretary Huestis of the Lord's Day Alliance attended to give his views on the matter. On being pressed on the sub- ject as to whether he would ask the Attorney-General for permission to prosecute if the cheesemakers took in milk on Sunday, he replied: "I would certainly not ask the Attorney- General to give me power to act, if, according to the law, it was a casc of necessity." This statement seemed to clear the air to some extent, the members evidently taking Mr. Hues- tis's statement as an assurance that the Alliance would not interfere un- less it was absolutely mecessary. INCREASE FOR YEAR IN CANADA'S TRADE Ottawa, Web. 18.---Canada's trade advanced $297,000,000 dur- ing the 12 months ended Jan. SL. The total for that period was $2,- 601,898,766 as compared with $2,304,625,275 in the. preceding corres period. Figures were made available today at the domin- ion bureau of statistics. Domestic exports increased from $1,216,806,560 to $1,362,- 128,965 while imports moved up from $1,087,818,715 to $1,239. 769,800. For January alone domestic ex- ports amounted to $94,942,041 as against $82,564,479 in January, 1928. Imports in January last were $96,958,301, and in January, 1928, $79,506,417. Duty collected for the 12 months was 195,220,985, an increase of $26.900.000 over the total of $168,601,256 for the previous g period. | Said a raise 1s impossible--Chicage | Daily News. 014 floors finished lke new, Storm windows, combination doors, General Contractors. World Figures Mourn Death of Journalist New York, Feb, 18--Messages of condolence from world figures con- tinued to pour in today to the family of Melville E. Stone, counsellor and retired general manager of the Asso- ciated Press, Mr, Stone died at his home Fri- day night after an illness of several months, Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Park Avenue Baptist Church, 593 Park avenue, in charge of the Rev, Harry Emerson Fosdick. The veteran senator has been confined to his room for some weeks. He reached the age of 101 years on September 29 last, and his resist- ance to the malady from which he is suffering is considered by his physicians to be little short of maw vellous. CATHOLIC BSG CLOSED IN MEXICO Mexico City, Feb. 18.--The depart ment of the interior has closed the Catholic school "Jeanne Chezard" here and evicted ten muns charged with leading a community life in the school.
