BEECROFT Whitby Lumber and Wood Yard, Phone Oshawa 324 Whitby 12 What Others Say : WEAVIH AND GIVING To The Editor: "There appeared an interesting article in your paper on the 4th under heading of "What Others Say" re miners' fund and our friend attacks among others, the Oshawa millionaires. While my sympathy {is with the miners and they should get support, taking a wider view of the situation what are these Osh- awa gentlemen to do. They give and give freely for they are all benevo- lent ment. Only a few days ago one of those gentlemen gave a gift of $22,000 to this city for the benefit of us all, I think that instead of finding fault with them if we got together and approached them in a proper manner to see if some- thing could not be done to make conditions a little better for our own workmen and by so doing make this city of ours a better place to live in I think they would be better pleased, and the workers more sat- isfied. The miners have never worked for these gentlemen here so why slam them. I wish I was one of them, and should be if I only know how. But these men, the miners,-- have all 'more or less worked and given of their time talents and sub- stance to Englands, greatest mil- lionaire, namely, General Booth, through the Salvation army, and this man Booth has got more money than all our Oshawa friends put together, namely about 300 millions, Our men are continually giving. You never hear of Booth giving a nickel. our men have to pay income tax also when our friends pass out there will be a death duty. Will there be one with the General. I amr afraid not. So let us be fair in our dealings, This man General Booth is one of the Millionaires who should give for, the miners have not only given him of thelr money but also them- selves and helped him to amass, un- %| der the cloak of Self Denial, that enormous sum of some 300 millions in England alone, FAIR PLAY A PLEA FOR HISTORIC ACOURACY Dear Editor, Can it be possible that a man with any regard for candour and accuracy would utter such a state- ment as that attributed by your re- porter to a visitor admitted to one of our city pulpits on a recent Sun- day evening: I quote--'"'The crucifixion was performed by the Romans, and the blame should be placed on the Roman Government." Sunday school children know the facts. The Jews treacherously seiz- ed Jesus, and condemned Him to death, but being subject to Rome had no power to execute a death sentence. Pllate is justly blamed, because, being made a coward by conscience, he weakly yielded to the persistent clamour of a Jewish mob. Roman soldiers were the exe- cutioners of Jesus, but the Jewish people, instigated by their relig- fous leaders, were His mmurderers. They, and they alone were humanly responsible for the world's darkest tragedy. All Christians will surely unite in Paul's prayer -- "Brethren my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be sav- ed," and heartily support ' every wise effort to hasten that happy consumation; but distortion of facts cannot help any good work.
