The glass is made with beryllium, a chemical element, that occurs in a few comparatively rare minerals. One of its properties is increased hardness, which seems to offer a field for making optical glasses of better resistance to minute scratches that come from wear. Another quality is to admit con- siderable ultra-violet light, the quantities have been well established. Whether the ultra-violet transmission thing that sunlight slowly breaks down by a process called solariza- tion, has not yet been tested. The glass was made in the depart- ment of Prof. Alexander Silverman, head of chemistry, by Chi Fang Lai, a Chinese research fellow. His in- terest in producing the glass sprang from a dream of aiding China's pros- perity by developing a market for his country's . deposits of beryl, a mineral containing beryllium. When separated from other. sub- stances, beryllium oxide is snow white. In making the new glass, it is substituted for lime, which is used in ordinary glass. Professor Silver- man said that beryllium oxide will be tried in combination with other chemicals to discover its possibilities for making still different types of SIX MILLIONS 1 ELECT HOOVER Final Statement of National Committee Treasurer Filed With Congress Ba i the D. lican party more than $6,000,000.
